As an aside, in the UK I have access to BT Broadband and Tesco broadband. I haven't been able to download anything when using BT from ez**.** for months but this week Tesco blocked me too. Luckily there were proxy websites listed, but I guess they might be blocked eventually...

I imagine this isn't intended to catch Youtube and sites that people post cat videos (although I'm sure it will), but once it does or once it gains some real momentum, Google will throw their lawyers into fight it. It sounds like it's more directed at the sites where people post entire movies, tv seasons, etc. IE, all the places that things like 1Channel pull from. That said, how many of them are hosted in the US, and do they go after the uploaders, the hosting, the people running those sites? Based on the two articles, not enough information to know exactly..

I think one thing that annoys me about some of this is that for me at least, I torrent things like Game of Thrones because there's no real way to stream them or at least there wasn't when I began watching. If a lot of these media companies would embrace streaming media for a price that is actually reasonable it would die down a lot I think. Look at Spotify and Pandora, since they came about I believe studies have shown that pirating of music has gone down because there is an alternative now to buying an entire CD and you don't have to deal with Itunes. Of course the anti-piracy lobbyists believe it's all due to their efforts to scare us.

Pandora has definitely curb stomped my desire to pirate music. It's a brilliant service at a reasonable price and it's convenient as can be. We need more stuff like that on the market. The internet isn't going away and the entertainment industry really needs to come to grips with that reality rather than trying to halt the march of progress with misguided legislation.

There are a ton of places that stream every TV show. I can't torrent, so I have to do that. I linked one earlier, there are others like it. Vidya is hosted on other sites and the sites I referenced host links to those streams. I haven't had cable or a TV in 4 years.

Yeah I don't even bother pirating music anymore unless it's something really obscure, I just use Pandora. I barely pirate games anymore because of Steam and I don't really pirate movies anymore because of Netflix/others. There are just a few things here and there I will pirate and that's only because there's no alternative other then shelling out a bunch of $$ for something i'm unsure of (aka a movie i'm on the fence about dropping $20 for a dvd/$11or$22 for tickets) or tv shows I can't get otherwise (HBO/Showtime series that arnt on Netflix or Netflix hasn't updated the season).

Netflix needs to update their selection more. I'm glad Breaking Bad just got updated which means I dont have to go out and get season 4/5 anymore.

They stream legally? Also do they stream paid channels like HBO/Showtime? Lastly are they slathered in commercials every 5 minutes like some lol?

There is a middle ground here I think, it just hasn't been entirely found yet.

What about paying by the channel for content? So for instance, lets say I pay for ESPN instead of paying for cable TV in general. This way I could watch ESPN live on my TV if I wanted to, then stream ESPN on my PC, and watch any previous show via a streamer/DVR type function?

I would gladly pay $50 a month for a HBO, ESPN, big four networks, USA, TBS, FX lineup and get rid of the 150 channels I don't watch.

A la carte channel cable is where the industry is going, kicking and screaming all the way. As more stuff becomes a la carte online, the cable/satellite industry will have to adapt as they lose customers. Live sporting events will be the last holdout, as they are the thing that most people don't DVR or timeshift, they want to watch as it happens.

Eventually that type of pricing is going to have to be implemented. My wife and I thought about getting HBO for Game of Thrones this past season but we would have to buy the premium package from Verizon that includes all the other bullshit we didn't want at a marked up price. Luckily for some reason we ended up getting HBO to our home for free due to some mixup that i'm not gonna report, sadly its only the SD channel but w/e. I would have gladly paid just for HBO from them, or pay for a handful of channels I watch often enough to warrant the price. As it is now we're just going to cancel cable and use netflix/streaming sites and then torrents to fill in the rest.

And yeah like Archi said, they are going to be dragged along kicking and screaming and finally figure out they stand to make money by offering us what we want instead of flipping out when we go around them to get it for free. It's a hassle to steal shit and most people would rather just pay a couple bucks for it.

People been asking for this forever, even just on cable packages, people have always wanted to select just the channels they want. Seems to me we have some scared ass networks, that realize they have some shitty shit channels no one is going to subscribe to, and therefore not end up accidentally watching. To that I say, capitalism baby.

Sorry bro, capitalism is only for small business/medium business. Once you get to start up monopolies and get lobbyists dem rules dont apply.

Have you ever gotten something A La Carte from a Menu at a restaurant? They always jack up the price. Why would you think the networks and Cable companies wouldnt do the same? Just look at what is going on with TWC and CBS.
