Mixtapes good, albums really really meh.
Mixtapes good, albums really really meh.
Buddy and I talked about mixtapes vs. albums. Whether it's rappers or execs, the decision was made to make radio friendly albums and/or "popular" music for them while mixtapes can be whatever the artist wants them to be. Also, mixtapes allow the artist to shit all over the original. Great example is Lupe using Wayne's "Fireman" beat on Enemy of The State.
It's about money, royalties and sample clearance issues. It's called popular music for a reason: many people like it and it sells well. You make an album to sell records and make money, as far as labels are concerned. Major Labels have a lot of influence on the albums direction (see: Lupe Fiasco, BoB). Top Dawg is one of the few labels where it seems like the artists do what they want (they're also indepedent, I believe), and it's been successful thus far. The model is definitely changing, especially with Chance The Rapper getting as fucking huge as he did, it's ridiculous. I think there's gonna be a huge shift towards free music releases -> tours. Internet makes it stupid easy to make and distribute music, and allows more freedom to the artists as well. 2013's mixtape game was OD. Half of what I listen to is off mixtapes.
This deserves bumping the thread.
someone needs to put Q on a diet
Checked out SBQ's album, shit is pretty good. Hoover Street instrumental pissed me the fuck off though, it was so good starting out and then it never fucking dropped.
i dont want to compare this to gkmc, but its very similar to it. not that its a bad thing, seeing as how gkmc is like one of the best albums to come out. that being said, hell of a night/los awesome fucking so good. the wait was worth it
my daddy a gangsta
You're my only friend who likes Los Awesome like me. Everyone else hates it for some reason and idgi. Fucking love that song.
Also, the album is probably 10x better when I realized it ends on Man of the Year rather than Fuck La. It makes it much more cohesive than I originally thought. It also makes the snippet of His & Her Friend make a lot more sense (he's talking about gang banging and living the life of a crip, and the snippet is like "you wanna come fuck with us, babe?" and then it goes into Collard Greens which is a partyish song about broads, so it fits.
MY DADDY SAID
YOURE A NIGGA
I lost my shit at the first half of Kendrick's verse in Collard Greens.
