Cannot catch Carp Diem or Ghost Carp for the life of me. I've yet to get a bite after numerous sessions with the correct time/bait/weather.

Anyone. Know what's up with navigators brand? 303 gathering yumi bait on clear/sunny days and nothing. Is it that hard to get or I'm missing something?

Random number generator is random.

(also your gathering stat has nothing to do with the bite rate, only whether or not you can reel it in when it does bite)

You're meeting all the requirements to catch it, so at this point, it's matter of patience. It's not uncommon to go entire windows without even hooking a targeted big fish. Just keep on casting and you'll eventually land it.

Night time is "better" for Navigator's Brands since you won't get unnecessarily excited by hooking a Mahi Mahi and getting the big catch animation. It might actually BE better as night time has one less fish capable of being caught, but it's likely marginal because of how rare Mahi Mahi are in the first place.

You're thinking of Silver Sovereigns.

Navigators are the big fish off of the Brewers Beacon in W. Lanos.

Sidenote: why are the Navigators untradeable anyway? They're not used for a quest or anything.

That quest only gets you that one title (Ambitious Angler?) though, I don't think it's required to actually start big fishing.

You're correct, this quest isn't a requirement to unlock anything beyond a title. I imagine this quest chain was designed as an introduction to big fishing, FSH's 'endgame'. It reinforces the importance of weather and time to fishing, and it introduces the importance of melds (required for Silver Sovereigns)

Sawfish is only the 1st half of the quest, but Navigator's Brand is a total cakewalk in comparison. Go get you a title! Might as well, it's easy enough to hit two buttons while watching a movie or something. Afk like a champ!

Oh, you might have missed out on a masterclass troll pulled by some JP player. For awhile, his/her shopped screenshot convinced a lot of people that sawfish had the chance to desynth into master demis. It was such a goddamn sadistic idea that it took awhile to put down that rumor. I mean, of course SE would do something like that, you know?

Ah, well, good thing I haven't bothered trying to catch one then, and even more reason to continue doing so.

Caught Shark Tunas, Lone Rippers, Twitchbeards, etc.

But Sawfish? Nah son, nah.

From patch notes:

Fish that appear only in certain combinations of weather conditions have been added.
E.g. Breeds of fish that only appear in rainy storms that directly follow sunny spells.

Fish that only appear based on your previous catches have been added.
E.g. Breeds of fish that only appear after five of their natural predator have been caught.

That sounds . . . terrible

Bad news Niiro, looks like SE came up with a reason:

Feast of Famine | Fisher level 50

Limsa Lominsa – Lower Decks (X:10 Y:11) | NPC: Wawalago

Players must first complete the quest "The Beast of Brewer's Beacon."

There's an i80 rod listed amongst the hundreds and hundreds of other new things in the preliminary patch notes. Now I'm not necessarily saying this quest and the rod are related, but it's possible.
