Yes, they did. Either way this was a nice surprise considering they didn't do this for DQ X (Wii players got a 50% discount for the Wii U version but it wasn't free). I'm guessing Sony is involved here.

According to the announcement, PS3 players will be able to upgrade to the PS4 version for free, effectively removing the need to purchase the game for the new platform.
They're gonna release some bullshit edition which includes a limited companion or some cool glasses in game item with the PS4 one, thereby tempting owners of the PS3 one to buy it I bet.

Obviously, since it will at the same time be more incentive for new PS4 players.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

    This is my guess, too.

This probably has a lot to do with Sony fronting the bill to help boost sales of the ps4.

(Not that they even need it after the constant foot-in-mouth Microsoft had to do, but hey, I won't complain!)

Well, they are developing remote-play with the Vita so you can do your crafting/gathering and other basic activities while you poop.

Beta testing will commence on the PS4 version of FFXIV: ARR, on Saturday the 22nd of February 2014.

The FFXIV: ARR game service is now live on Windows PC and the PlayStation 3, and a PS4 version is currently in development. Essential work to increase the number of servers and strengthen the service environment, with the aim of alleviating the crowding on existing servers is also in progress.

Furthermore, those who are currently playing the PS3 version of FFXIV: ARR will not have to re-buy the game on PS4 and will be able to transition to playing on PS4 at no additional cost. They will even be able to carry over their character data and continue playing on the new platform.

Further information on the PS4 beta tests and the PS4 version transition service will be released soon and we hope everyone will have a great experience with FFXIV: ARR.

    • Since the hardware specs of the PS4 are high and Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will use them to their full potential, there will be a large improvement in the number of characters displayed on screen at the same time compared to the PS3 version, and in the quality of each character. The difference in graphical fidelity will be very visible.
    • Remote Play with the PS Vita will be fully supported. Yoshida-san makes the example of gathering, fishing, crafting or questing solo while relaxing on the couch on the PS Vita, and then, when the time for party play starts, one can switch to the PS4 to enjoy the challenging dungeon content on the big screen.
    • A companion app for the PS Vita is planned, including a database and the features of the new Lodestone, but Remote Play is the priority.
    • It will be possible to point and click in the PS4 version using the touch pad of the DualShock 4, improving the user interface further.
    • It’ll be possible to upload video using the Share button of the PS4 due to licensing agreements done with voice actors (Japanese laws are rather strict on this), also, videos made with the Share button will be useful to learn how to do difficult high level dungeons.
    • There will be no change in the content of the game moving from the PS3 version to the PS4 version, as the game will be fully cross platform, so you’ll still be able to play with the same friends.
    • Yoshida-san encourages players to consider switching to the PS4 version from the PS3 version, because the PS4′s hardware allows for an impressive performance, much better graphics and displaying 100 or 200 people at the same time on the screen. The passage will be immediate and seamless because the servers are the same and transferring character data is not necessary.
    • When asked about his point of view as a creator on what he likes the most of the PS4 Yoshida-san responded that it’s the memory size, because it gives more freedom of expression and design. You can create higher quality characters and levels. He also appreciates the wider choices of play style represented by the share button, Remote Play and companion apps. He feels that the PS4 will test the development team, making things easier and harder at the same time.

They said that PS3 players would get the upgrade to PS4 for free months ago, think it was in a Live Letter. Did everyone just forget about it and suddenly it's news again?

No, what they said was cryptic, as usual for S-E. People weren't sure whether they meant PS3 owners get a free game or they just used fancy words saying that you can use your PS3 character to play on the PS4 version without doing any convert or w/e.

Huh, I guess that makes sense. It's nice to have confirmation, though, since I purchased a PS3 copy mainly to play on the PS4.

Hopefully this massively boosts animation frame rate for other PC's/Mobs , on ps3 looking at other characters move about town it looks like that old clay stop/go animation, like the monsters in Jason and the Arganoughts

I need to go get the game for PS3 now. I just wonder besides character models and frame rate if it will be truely equal to the PC version in graphics.

    The Downside
Square Enix said players who purchase the PlayStation 3 version of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 4 version without any additional costs. Speaking with Famitsu, producer/director Naoki Yoshida elaborated on the transfer, which is actually a transfer of login rights.

Yoshida said to eliminate any upgrade costs, players will lose the rights to play the PlayStation 3 version if they upgrade to Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn for PlayStation 4. Once you do the transfer to PS4 you will not be able to login to Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn on PS3. Yoshida further clarified that even if your PS4 is in your living room with FFXIV and your PS3 is in your bedroom you won’t be able to play FFXIV on your PS3 because the login rights are bound to the PS4 version. If you want to play on multiple devices with the same account you will need to buy another copy similar to how you need the PC version and console version to play on both platforms.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn for PlayStation 4 will be in full HD, 1920 x 1080p resolution. You will be able to play the game with a keyboard and mouse. You can also use the touch panel on the top of the DualShock 4 as a mouse. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will support remote play and Yoshida was candid about the experience on Vita. He said it would be tough to play since the text in the chat windows would be small and the Vita doesn’t have enough buttons. He’s going to see if he can utilize the rear touch panel as a possible solution.

Yoshida also said he thinks he should be able to show the PlayStation 4 version around the end of the year and it should be indistinguishable from the PC version.
