DQ I available on November 28, first 1 million copies are free, $5 afterwards
The Dragon Quest series is coming to iOS and Android starting with the original Dragon Quest. Square Enix will re-release the smartphone version on November 28 and the first million people to download it will get Dragon Quest for free. After that, Dragon Quest will cost a reasonable 500 yen ($5).

Dragon Quest for smartphones is interesting since it uses a vertical layout. The graphics have been upgraded too and we’re not just talking about the NES version. These game looks even sharper than the Super Famicom remake Dragon Quest I & II.

I wonder if we will get the same treatment when a US port is done. Free for the first downloads and all would be nice!
    But I have a feeling we won't get so lucky. . .

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters Of The Chosen
    Spoiler: show

Square Enix is planning on bringing Dragon Quest I through Dragon Quest VIII to smartphones, but they aren’t releasing the games in order. Japan get Dragon Quest first then Dragon Quest VIII. Next up is Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen since Square Enix is starting to talk about the smartphone version.

Dragon Quest IV uses the same control system as Dragon Quest VIII. The games are designed to be played with one hand and use a popup joystick to move around the field. Square Enix fine tuned the game by adding five battle speed settings and a quicksave feature so you can save your game even when there isn’t a church nearby. Dragon Quest IV also has the extra story chapter from the Nintendo DS remake which was localized for the West.

Square Enix is also preparing a patch for Dragon Quest VIII that addresses memory crashing bugs, battle tempo, and adds new alchemy recipes.

    Cloud saves added to DQVIII
While you won’t see Zenitha in Dragon Quest VIII, Square Enix updated the smartphone version of Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King with a cloud save feature. Both the iOS and Android versions have cloud saves, but you cannot exchange data between platforms.

Square Enix has continued to improve Dragon Quest VIII over the past few months auto-saving was tweaked, a quick save feature was enhanced, and battle tempo was adjusted. The game costs 2,800 yen, but right now it has only been released on the Japanese app stores.

    Android, too
Commemorating the 10th anniversary of the initial Japanese launch on the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system, Squarew Enix’s Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King is now available on iOS and Android devices.

The game lets players take on the role of the “Hero,” the last survivor of King Trode’s army. “Hero” must track down the evil jester who stole a powerful scepter and caused this tragedy.

“Following its PlayStation 2 system launch in 2004, Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King saw immense success and became an instant cult classic,” said Noriyoshi Fujimoto, producer of the mobile version of Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King. “The game is perfectly suited as a tremendous value for mobile and tablet as a full 60-plus hour console game with an epic tale of friendship, bravery and adventure. We've put in extra effort for the controls to be intuitive and easy to play. Its 10th anniversary is the ideal milestone to re-release the game for fans and new players alike.”

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King lets mobile players explore the game’s vast grassy fields, snow-capped mountains, daunting dungeons and restless seas. Players can slide their screens to pan the camera in a full 360 degrees around the character. In addition, Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King also features the original title’s revolutionary synthesizer score, orchestrated by the series’ long time music composer Koichi Sugiyama.

Additional Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King features include

Controls: Players have access to smooth, intuitive touch-panel controls and a customizable user interface. The in-game directional button is also customizable, allowing one-handed (or two-hand) play.

Battle: Reworked combat system allows for one-tap turn-based battles as well as more complex play. Players can choose an in-game battle strategy to move their character and parties automatically during battles; players also have direct control of their characters and parties during battles.

Auto Run Mode: As the fields are vast, players now have the option to auto-run through boundless environments.

Monster Recruit: Monsters inhabiting the game can be recruited into the player’s party.

Alchemy Pot: This pot allows players to mix various products in order to create new, stronger items.

So I bought Dragon Quest VIII a while back. I thought I'd put down a little more details here.

    The pluses
    - Playing the game one-handed is completely viable. There's no need for two thumbs.
    - Veterans of the series know that having the main character (and crew) be 100% AI controlled can be a boon since the AI changes what to prioritize in battle. Previously the main character had 0 AI choices.
    - They built controls that make the grinding and movement easier.

    The negatives
    - That framerate.
    - I feel like the game just looked better on a big screen. Can't knock it too hard for this though, they did what they could.

    Both?
    - No voiced dialogue. You miss out on hearing some of the good-awful VA. Though, if you played DQ8 in the past, you can probably insert their voices yourself. (Queen Sasher. Emmer. Cor blimey!)

I'd say if you have no interest in getting a PS2 + this game and just want to deal with the framerate, it will suit you fine.
