      Spoiler: show
Not to be outdone by The Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailer (complete with a tease of Doc Ock and Vulture), director Bryan Singer and 20th Century Fox have made a huge announcement for the X-Men franchise coming in the summer of 2016. By way of Twitter, Singer merely tweeted, "#Xmen #Apocalypse 2016" and then Box Office Mojo said the film would arrive on May 27th, 2016. If you're not freaking out about that title, you're not familiar with the iconic X-Men villain called Apocalypse, who has conquered North America and enslaved humanity in the comics. He's one of the most powerful villains the X-Men have faced.

Here's a short description of Apocalypse from The Marvel Encyclopedia:

Born nearly 5,000 years ago in ancient Egypt, Apocalypse is one of the earliest known mutant humans. As "En Sabah Nur", or "The First One," he traveled the world for thousands of years, instigating wars to test which nations were fittest and was worshipped as a god by ancient civilizations.

In the 20th century, Nur, now called Apocalypse, decided that the emerging superhuman mutants were destined to supplant unfit ordinary humans. Hence, he often battled the original X-Fact and the X-Men, who were dedicated to peaceful coexistence between mutants and other humans.

Though extraordinarily long-loved, Apocalypse's phsyical body eventually wore out. He survived by projecting his consciousness into host bodies.

The powers of Apocalypse include altering the atomic structure of his body to change shape, increasing his size by absorbing additional mass, superhuman strength, stamina and durability.

We're not sure how this villain will come into play with the new story arc that essentially kicked off with The Wolverine and the credits tease into X-Men: Days of Future Past, but clearly this will immediately follow the events of next summer's time traveling sequel. That means Hugh Jackman will be pretty busy pulling Wolverine duty since he's also working on a sequel to The Wolverine with director James Mangold returning. It sounds like Bryan Singer will be back to direct if the news came from the filmmaker himself. At the very least, he would produce the film.

What's interesting is that in the comic storyline The Age of Apocalypse, which ran in 1995, the story takes place in an alternate reality formed by interference to the original timeline. In The Age of Apocalypse, Professor X was murdered before he could form the X-Men and a much different version of the team was formed by Magneto, leading them through a post-apocalyptic America ruled by mutants. This likely won't be the exact story that ends up on the big screen, but since X-Men: Days of Future Past deals with time travel, we're betting it'll serve as some sort of inspiration. Thoughts?

Oh god if AoA happened in the current marvel cinematic universe @_@

Too bad Fox is trying to do it and won't let them have the rights.

AoA would be cool but they would really need to introduce the hell out of and focus on Legion, Cable/Nate Grey, Bishop, and Holocaust along with making Rogue and Cyclops better characters. All major players in that storyline and all kind of suck dick in the movieverse. Basically only Magneto has been built up enough for an AoA storyline.

Xforce movie could focus on Cable obviously and I guess they could find a different route to force the Age of Apoc and skip Legion all together. Looks like Bishop will be in Days of the Future Crap. So basically just introduce Holocaust, tho I guess they could just not even bother with him.

maybe Age of Apocalypse as a sequel to this movie?

Oh I forgot that these movies are piles of shit so they will just vomit into a bag, call it age of apocalypse and all of you nancies will fap to it

Yeah they would have to really take their time before jumping into an AOA storyline for the movies.
