The statue of the Ten Commandments will get removed long before they erect other statues -- and then Fox News will tell the story of how crazy religions are waging war against Christianity and Gretchen will bitch about why she can't take her kids to see the statue of the Ten Commandments, etc etc etc.

i may be wrong, but don't Satanists basically argue on the other side of the coin that is Christianity?

    GOD IS BETTER

    NO, SATAN IS

    etc?

The only thing I can think of, other than a giant pentagram going up next to the commandments, is a statue of a satyr giving the commandments the middle finger. big fucking whoop de doo

    No.
Not going to make a long exposé of left-hand path religions/philosophies here, but Satanism usually refers to LaVeyan Satanism, which holds that Satan doesn't exist.
It's basically a materialistic philosophy directed towards angry teens; its principles aren't too bad, but the wording is weird.

because it's for rebels, and what's more rebellious than satanism?

edit: should prolly clarify that i was being slightly sarcastic, since the above is circular logic. ashmada hit the nail on the head. it's all about getting a rise out of their parents.

Trolling christians. I did mention it was aimed at angry teens.

I'm not even joking, that's the very thinly-veiled excuse behind the name. They'll disguise it as Satan being a symbol of rebellion, but really it's about trolling christians.

Edit: this is what I get for trying to educate an utter moron.

And that's the best possible outcome for separation of church and state anyway so that will be fine.

Didn't SCOTUS already rule against having the Ten Commandments on state property?

Yep I just want to see the monument. I do think it is an all or nothing argument when it comes to religious monuments in communities of multiple faiths and non.

    Bumping with an update:

The Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that the state must remove a 6-foot tall granite monument of the Ten Commandments from its capitol because it violates the state's constitutional ban against the use of public funds or property to benefit a religion.

Best possible outcome indeed. You know neither one of those groups wanted their stuff at the courthouse. They just wanted to law to be followed.

Enh. The Christians will probably put it along the lines of "Christianity has been a major driving force throughout American history; this is not a celebration of religion, but a recognition of that religion's influence on our country's development." It's typically been the influence of Christianity that Christians point to for religious symbolism; I don't see why they wouldn't here. It's not wrong-- Christianity *does* have a deeply significant influence on America's progression, and *has* been a massively important factor in American social and, at times, legal development.

I could see putting totem poles or other American Indian religious icons on government land in a lot of places (particularly OK); we certainly have Greek and Roman religious symbolism rampant. And if you had an area that was particularly influenced by Hindus, or by Satanists, or *insert religion here*, the same sort of argument would apply. Acknowledging the importance of religion in our development isn't favoring one or another, save that recorded American history has been dominated primarily by Christianity (for better, for worse, take your pick).
