The current price is $65/week, so $9.29 a day for ~2200 calories.

To elaborate: Each day's Soylent comes in a bag, so $65 gets seven bags. If you use it for two meals a day, you may stretch seven bags out to longer than a week. If you need more than 2200 calories and consume more than a single bag in a day, then weekly cost'll go up.

if you can get my intestines to stand up and answer this question you'll probably win a nobel prize. i like tasty food as much as the next guy, but i dislike pain more. that's literally the choice, for me. there are a few tasty meals i can still eat, but they don't have the nutrition i need.

So much for "less effort and cost"

Less effort yea, cost, not so much. Not really worth looking into until the price comes down. That's 260/month. I eat on far less than that; and stretching it out means I'd have to fill in money elsewhere to make up for the diff.

Good for convenience, but not in the slightest for being cost effective

What do you eat for less than $260 a month that provides full nutrients/vitamins/calories and is healthy? $260/30=$8.60 a day / 3 = $2.88 per meal (if you consume 1 bag per day, assuming 3 meals per day.) I spend $9-12 a day on lunch alone. Genuinely curious.

Chicken, oatmeal, eggs, canned beans, spinach, sweet potatoes covers the majority of my meal and is generally 50/week or less

As someone who cooks quite regularly for my family - not every day, but definitely more than a couple of times a week - I don't see why it's such trouble to find nutritious food that's both cheap AND delicious. The grocery bill for my entire family (3 people) rarely breaks 450 bucks a month, and that's including snacks like cookies and potato chips now and then.

The average meal for 3 costs, what, less than 10 bucks to prepare? And less than half an hour to make too. If you're cooking for one (which I've done before) do a soup/stew and freeze the leftovers. In terms of preparation time it's only the chopping and slicing (which can be made easier with appliances) and then you bung it in the oven/slow cooker and you've got 3 meals for the price of one. Make a sandwich or a grilled chicken or something once in a while so you don't get bored of the same stuff. Or eat out on non-soup days.

Like others in the thread I don't see how you can hate eating that much. I mean, food tastes GOOD! Some of it anyway. Yes there is the time spent buying groceries, but you have to get milk and other stuff at the store too, may as well do it all at once. Also, you can buy in bulk and have it delivered, then store the stuff in the freezer/chiller. You get to save money AND keep a close watch on your nutrition as well.

I really don't see how synthetic stuff beats real food, both in terms of price, nutrition and taste factor.

Won't argue nutrition/cost, but taste; I can't cook for shit. I'd be willing to bet I'd rather down this shit than my own food. Hell, I'd rather McDonald's burger meat over a filet Mignon if I were the one cooking the steak

Come on CS, all you just need is ramen and your body building still can beat everyone over here. But I rather kill myself if I had to take this product instead of real food.

I'm just talking on taste level. I'm a horrible cook. While all I NEED is ramen, it tastes like shit and I have to force myself to eat my own cooking; which is why I have like 2-3x the number of cheat days I'm supposed to

I have heard the "cooking is so easy, why not just do it" thing a million times. Because I just don't. Food is not worth it to me. I'd rather have the extra 5 mins doing nothing than spending it cooking, for some reason.

I like food and cook really tasty dinners. I'm just looking at this as a possible workday breakfast and lunch replacement so I don't have to bother. Don't have time for breakfast mon-fri and usually work through my lunch. Dunno if I'll do it permanently but I'll give it a go for a month to try it.

As someone who likes to cook and loves food, this still appeals to me. I miss out on so many meals on a weekly basis because of time or laziness, to be able to replace a meal with something so convinient is just an awesome idea, especially considering you aren't replacing it with fast food, and instead you're getting proper nutrition you need.

For me, most food i really enjoy costs too much, or take too much effort to make. I'm not too busy to spend more than 3 minutes preparing+eating a meal, but I just don't care enough to. I'd rather spend my time posting on bg about how I'm too lazy to eat anything.

Soylent is being marketed to tech types who have no capacity for cooking anyway. They have better things to do like porn, banner ads, binge MMOs or work at the NSA. This product seeks to alleviate petty hunger while allowing you to spice it up with whatever makes the slop go down. Flavors seem like a natural extension if this gets beyond the reddit circles and into the mainstream anyway.

I'm more concerned with the long term impacts on the human body of living off Soylent in long term trials. I know someone will be brave enough to try living off it for years.

Poor choice on the name though. I was thinking more Ambrosia, Holy Grail, FoodHax or E-Tank.

CS, cheat days may apply for diets, but not for budgeting. unless someone else is buying it for you. did you take that into account in your calculations? not jumpin, just askin.

This is appealing to me since we all have shit diets in Law Enforcement. It's not convenient to pack a lunch when you're stuck in a car every day so you're forced to grab food that requires no brain and little prep to eat since you won't always have access to a microwave. A regular meal for me if I pack lunch is a nutrition shake, a PB&J, maybe a turkey/cheese sandwich with some of that powdered nutritional yeast my wife likes to spike my meals with and a Go-Gurt. I recently went from straight coffee to green tea to give me some variety and I consume maybe a gallon of water a day.

When I was single it was straight Ramen or buy food every day. It's expensive to drop 5-10 bucks a day on Wendy's or McDonalds and then you're not even guaranteed to eat the whole thing if a hot call comes out. Countless times have I abandoned half a meal or a whole meal at some place because something popped off and I had to run quick. Easy to eat and handheld meals like burritos are good but I hate eating in the car (acid reflux likes to kick in when I can't stretch out and eat) and almost all of those are full of crap calories and sodium (ever eaten a sandwich at 7-11? Turkey and Swiss or the Italian Club and loaded with over 2000 MG of sodium). It's so convenient to grab a bag of chips or something to hold you over till you get home and eat and I tried that for a while but the risk of getting forced to work 20+ hour shifts sometimes makes that impossible. Then add the factor of soda (which I cut completely out) made for really unhealthy eating.

With this I can just drink it and leave it in the car or drink while I ride when I start feeling hungry, and know I'm not putting a whole lot of garbage in my body. I started taking supplements because I was afraid I wasn't getting enough with my diet. My doctor told me that supplements are an okay substitute but will never replace a good healthy diet. With this it's just simple and easy. +1 if it gets cheaper.
