Currently studying for my FMF pin / advancement as a Navy corpsman, and I was wondering if any branches out there have any funny / scary stories / which deals with advancing or qualifying for anything. For the pin we have to study a 300+ page book, while doing prac apps, land navigation, and written test. After all that is done we go through a murder board which is a 4+ hour question asking process to see if you remember everything in that 300+ page book. Then a regular board so you can pass and wear ya pin. I heard back in the day you had to complete a PFT and do a hike to be accepted into the murder board.

Let's see, stories...

While studying for my SW, I was doing a walkthrough of all of the engine spaces, and ended up falling asleep in AUX 2, lower level. I was woken up by a rover not because i was in trouble, but because the guy on watch in DC Central wanted me to do guage readings since i was already there.

We had one guy activate the HALON system in MER while trying to point out to the guy giving him a walkthrough that he did indeed know how to activate it.

We had one guy go to Captain's Mast for something stupid, and instead of busting him down in pay, they shredded his book and made him start from scratch. Ouch.

Jeez, your process seems alot more involved then it does for the Coast Guard. But we are basically fake military so that makes sense.

Course, I also spent 2 years filling an investigator billet in the duty section without ever having the Qual. Not a single JOOD ever bothered to check :X

This one time in Tuz Khomrato, Iraq, back in 2005, we got called out to respond to a suicide bomber. We didn't get the whole story on how things happened the way they did, until we arrived on scene.

Basically 3 men wearing about 15-20lbs of PE4 explosives mixed with ball bearings, approached a local temple as the afternoon prayer was ending, so a crowd of about 300-400 people. The other two detonated, killing something like 20ish peeople, and the thirds vest either malfunctioned or he chickened out, (still not sure to this day) but he was mauled and had his hands bound and tied to a tree about a block away from the temple.

We got there (4 man Airforce EOD team) and he was still wearing the vest with the firing device attached. We sent the robot down to do a recon cause we didn't want to approach a dude with 360 degree claymore strapped around him, and proceeded to interogate the item.

Long story short, we ended up cutting the vest off him with a benchmade switchblade, held in the grippers of the robot. As were trying to cut this mass of tape and cloth, he keeps flinching and our ORF commander (a capt. in the army) who is watching this, notices our frustration (I think our exact words were: "this shit head keeps jerking back from the robot so i can't cut the shit off him", and the capt. overheard) litterly screams at our interpreter to tell this guy "If he moves a fucking muscle, he's getting a fucking bullet in the fucking head".
He relays this message to the suicide bomber, who litterly stands there shaking while we are trying to cut this shit off him, but his pants sorta go up over the vest, so we have to pull them completely down. So he's standing there naked completely from the waist down, and the controls of the robot aren't the most precise thing and we approach him, and the robot jerks forward, and we end up stabbing this guy about an inch deep, right in his ass cheek.

God bless him, he didn't move though, just stood there, hands bound to a tree while this blood was running down his leg and his hang down is flopping in the wind. We get the vest off and the police immedietly grab this guy after my team leader clears the scene, and the last thing i heard a few weeks later, was that he was a saudi, who was captured and forced into the situation.

This was the reason we didn't flat out shoot him where he stood, cause we didn't know.... which turned out to be a good thing, ya know.

And that's how i learned about suicide bombers.

Damn you stay away from the States, I'm in Cali ATM...was suppose to go do this retrograde in Afghanistan but my wife was preggo with our first kid. My chief pulled me in the room one day and asked if I wanted to stay here and TAD somewhere else so I can experience my first kid. Of course I said yes because I've heard a lot of stories of dads regretting not being here with their kid...especially the first one.

Putting a YN on the flight line even on the beach is some scary shit. Needless to say I only had to do my wing walking and duck diving quals for like 5 minutes. At my board, they asked me every single weapons layout for the F-14 and all kinds of crazy shit for being an admin puke and not having to do much in the way of "real quals". 5 of us went in for the board and I got asked 90% of the questions because all the other guys were AMs, AEs, and AOs.

Yes, but you get to see some of the funniest shit at Captain's Mast. My first YNCS told me, "When you're up for sea duty, take a squadron of anything over a ship," and the rest is history. IDK man, the shit you have to put up with on a ship would drive me fucking crazy. Ah, sea stories.

Some of my best friends happen to be (SW) YNs, but I don't hold it against 'em.

I finished my (SW) underway, then the ship went into refit for several years. At some point my Chief decided he wanted everyone to qualify (AW) on a carrier with no air wing, and huge sections of the flight deck cut out. I didn't argue, since I had less time in my enlistment than I had until I would have gone DINQ.
