[Hot Coffee: A Documentary that starts by discussing the McDonalds Hot Coffee incident, but moves perspective to the US landscape (and some key players, like a former US president) of consumer vs company in regards to restitution and settlements.]

Saw this on netflix a few months back. Very interesting. Especially when they discuss arbitration and generally how awful it is (which, since watching that documentary I see everywhere; I received an email from dropbox last week saying that they had changed their policy and that if I didn't opt-out in the next 30 days that any issue I had would have to go through arbitration...or something to that effect).

Also, been awhile since I saw it, but pretty sure a lot of what Plow just posted was all crap.

just to clarify I'm not espousing the idea of "tort reform" in any way shape or form

I'm just pointing out that it's risky to allow the opportunity for "ridiculous" law suits to occur because they do, in fact, occasionally happen.

I'm not at all saying it's this huge problem where we need to absolve corporations of all responsibility.

It would also be a completely different issue if, you know, BG was some valuable resource for medical information, and that was a hard thing to find on the internet.

brb, suing yahoo answers for telling me it was ok to drink bleach if I had a toothache.

Also going to file civil suit against my friend for telling me that Aion "is a great game and will be a lot of fun".

You don't think anyone has ever done that, or anything similar?

People were dumb enough to think a software update could waterproof the hardware of their iPhone... and that's far more likely to pass a 'common sense' test than what chemicals can be safely mixed together.

Isn't their some exploding fork/spoon one with bloody hands posted by the victims and such?

Now now, in defense of yahoo answers, it would make the pain go away.

supposedly wrap a spoon in electric or duct tape over the handle, put the spoon end of it on a burner til it's red hot, put it under cold water and it'll explode

expectation being that people will go try it, not realize the tape is melted and hot as shit (because it doesn't look like it if it's undisturbed), pick it up thinking it will insulate from the heat of the spoon, and burn the fuck out of themselves

I've seen countless shit like that on 4chan, never seen any convincing evidence whatsoever that anybody actually fell for it, let alone decided to sue over it.

cuz, you know, if you want to trick someone into hurting themselves, tell them to make metal objects explode in their face and that'll totally convince them to go try it

You just have to be a little more clever than telling them "it will explode in your face", and at least occasionally people will be convinced to do stupid shit.

I totally believe the guy that claimed to be posting from the hospital on /b/ about falling for that, especially since it doesn't make mustard gas, uninformed people just think it does. It's actually chloramine, and that's not a mistake a doctor chemically testing for substances is going to make.

Also I'm not a doctor but I'm pretty sure the effects of mustard gas are more like burning and boiling/blistering, whereas with the chloramine it's eating shit away.

I'm not terribly interested in Plow plowing but if someone could post the pictures from the fork thing on 4chan I would be most appreciative, while we're on the subject.

Obligatory triforce, as per it's mention earlier:
    Spoiler: show

I vote for hijacking this thread with more 'people that got duped by the interwebs' pics, in the spirit of plow's heartfelt concerns for BG, and a cautionary tale to the power we wield as internet advisers. This is serious stuff here.

Real or not, point is, it's a lot easier to trick people when you're smart about it, and give them a reason to try it other than "herpa derp, do this and a spoon will explode in your face and kill you."
