Paladin General Discussion - 123123 My Job isn't Easy! I swear!

    2.0 Guide: http://www.bluegartr.com/threads/118...hlight=paladin

With 2.2 upon us, I thought we may need an area to discuss new gear and such.

What's the plan on Soldier Gear Order?

I'm thinking Noct Body > Ring > Shield but there is some talk of people thinking Shield should be first.

Shield is the best anyone will get for a while and you can get it right away. The 12acc is also very nice since it seems ACC cap for t6 is 494ish.

Shield > Body > Ring is the order I will use.

Then it will depend on my Coil progress and where drops come from. Most of the Noct sets seems pretty solid.

Edit: Might just stick to the left side after the shield

    Shield > Body > Hands(if need ACC)/Legs if not > Feet > Head

When you say shield, you mean the Noct Shield? I like the increased block strength, but I'm not really a big fan of losing block rate, especially with so much of the Noct/High Allagan Gear dropping Parry in comparison to Valor/Allagan.

The ring will be my first purchase. Not keen on buying the body or shield before we have an idea of which turns they come from. The shield is substantially better overall than anything else readily available but the decreased block rate combined with the general lack of Parry on any of the i110 gear leaves me wary of it. My current plan is Ring > Body, and I'll decide where to go from there when I get there.

In regards of the Noct Shield, given its low block rate and very high block strength wouldn't that translate to spike damage?
I don't know if that's something I'd take over more reliable, constant mitigation.

After comparing pieces, I've put together a preliminary gear set of what I think might be the new BiS for Paladin assuming the new accuracy requirements. This set would put me at about 501 accuracy which may or may not be overkill.

    http://xivdb.com/?wardrobe/10313/Pal...2-(Preliminary)

By no means is this set definitive yet as we don't know for sure what accuracy requirements are needed (for sure) in Turns 7, 8, and 9, and I mostly did this after eyeballing the Noct & High Allagan Gear for an hour. This set focuses Accuracy as its primary stat and parry as its secondary. Unfortunately, from the looks of it, with the stats on the new gear there's not really way to maintain the level of parry you had before (unless I've overlooked a possible combination), and this set loses approximately 40~ parry over what was BiS in 2.1 to maintain the increased accuracy requirements for Turns 6-9.

A nice thing of note is that after acquiring full BiS, whatever it may be since the VIT stat is the same among all pieces, your HP should be at around 8500-8600.

The thing about Noct Shield vs. kite shields is, a scutum/tower type shield reduces more damage over time than a kite, but more sporadically. It also increases the value of Bulwark quite a bit. Assuming your healers aren't prone to overheal when you block or if there's a monster that attacks for large amounts of damage at a very rapid rate, I don't see why Noct isn't the best at the moment. A loss of 40 parry shouldn't really be enough to offset this.

As far as shields are concerned:

    Weathered Noct: 0.12 * 0.30 = 3.6%
    Zenith/Atma/Allagan: 0.18 * 0.18 = 3.24%

The difference is about 0.4%, but on any given hit you are significantly less likely to block when using a Noct shield. I can't think of any time where I would have wanted to reduce AA damage over time by more, but I can certainly think of many times where I wish I had blocked Death Sentence.

If Bulwark is multiplicative it's neutral to all shield types. If it's additive it significantly benefits the tower shields:

    Weathered Noct: (0.12 + 0.6) * 0.30 = 21.6%
    Zenith/Atma/Allagan: (0.18 + 0.6) * 0.18 = 14.04%

However, Bulwark can only be up (15/180) 8% of the time, for an average increase in block rate of 4.8%. At that value, it's only a marginal advantage of ~1% (5.04% to 4.1%). A loss of 40 Parry is a decrease in parrying rate of ~3% which is going to hurt tower shields more than kite shields or bucklers (albeit marginally).

High Allagan destroys all the above.

With Animus Shield being pretty simple to upgrade Noct shield seems like a waste now. (If you are doing the Zodiac path)

Gonna grab body first now and finish Animus shield.

Sword/Shield only require 12 atma once. Shield get's a free ride but has to be Zenith.

Book split is 7 for Sword / 2 for Shield. Completing both Shield books allows you to trade it back and turns it into Animus.

OF COURSE I WAS GOING TO POST IT AGAIN

C/P'd from another thread because it's somewhat relevant to this thread:

4 of the FATEs were Four Winds (the four Ixal NMs in Coerthas), Return to Cinder (Amal'ja NM boss FATE in Zah'rak), a giant Dullahan boss FATE in the Shroud and an Ogre FATE in Mor Dhona. I was basically unkillable in them but lack the firepower to down them myself so I needed help. You're in luck that the Shroud and Southern Thanalan FATEs at Atma zones, so the horde will do your lightwork. The other two were a mushroom-killing FATE in another Shroud which is also an Atma zone and the annoying escort in Northern Thanalan that starts at Bluefog.

Had to also do Cutter's Cry/Pharos/Ampador for the VIT trial and Qarn/Haukke HM/Halatali HM for STR trial. Plus 20 different sets of trashx10. The leves are unremarkable.

Can I get a better angle for that shield? Design seems different from the Atma.

For the record, it doesn't glow on your back unless you use the sit trick.

Last two are to show how bright the damn thing is. Third to last shows how bright it is THROUGH MY BACK.
