Supposedly it's a monoclonal antibody against this particular strain of Ebola, so it is incredibly specific to whatever part of this Ebola virus that it recognizes.

The link above (combined with how Ebola typically spirals out of control) should give you some idea why the monkey trials generally only saw success when the antibody was administered before or within 48 hours of infection. I imagine that this antibody was being developed for some kind of "save the president" scenario or as one part of a longer journey to develop an effective vaccine. Widespread treatment with a monoclonal antibody (if it were available, which it isn't) would perhaps ensure that no one would get *this* particular strain of Ebola (until antibody counts dropped below an effective level), but it would encourage it to mutate slightly into something that is no longer affected by this antibody.

The danger with monoclonal antibodies is that they are also monospecific.

They're almost always effective, so I wouldn't doubt this was some super dose they give because they don't know how much to give.

These also aren't cheap to make, so I hope they don't make Africa hemorrhage money to obtain them.
