    H1Z1 (PC/PS4/XB1) | Just Survive (PC)

    Free-2-Play Zombie Survival
    Spoiler: show

Sony Online Entertainment’s next game is H1Z1, a free-to-play massively multiplayer online zombie survival game, company president John Smeley announced on a GamerTalk Live stream tonight.

The game will launch first for PC, with a PlayStation 4 release to follow.

Writing on Reddit, Smedley shared further details.

It’s been 15 years since the virus was first encountered, leaving the world devastated with nothing but death and destruction its wake, and what’s left of it overrun with the Infected. Humanity, hiding in the shadows, must search desparately for food, water, and other resources to survive, at the same time dealing with the Infected and other dangers, like animals and the brutality of other survivors. Scavenging and crafting via a “deep crafting system” are essential.

“Our vision for this game is very simple but ambitious,” Smedley said. “We are starting with what I would call ‘Middle America’ – an ‘anywhere and everywhere’ town. The world is massive as you’ve come to expect from our games.

“Over time we will grow the world until we have our own version of the U.S. after the death and destruction brought on during the H1Z1 epidemic. It will be our own version of America. We’ll have urban cities and desolate wide open places. All connected seamlessly.”

The focus is to create a sandbox style game where players can build their own shelters out of resources found in the world, as well as work together to make “amazing fortresses complete with weaponry.”

But zombie survival games are not new, and Smedley recognizes this. As for what makes H1Z1 different, Smedley offers the following:

    • “It’s a persistent MMO that can hold thousands of players on servers we host (yes there will be multiple servers with very different rule sets)…. It means a thriving economy (oh yes… there’s trading). It also means you have potential allies in the all-out war on the Infected… and many an enemy as well.”
    • “It uses our proprietary next-gen Forgelight engine and that means we’ve had a lot of really cool technology to work with to make the game we wanted to make.”
    • “It’s also designed from the ground up for our players to become part of the design process. The Roadmap system that we built for PlanetSide 2 will be used extensively to clearly communicate what features we’re working on and what you can expect and when. You’re also going to be getting awesome access to our developers. We’ll be opening it up for Player Studio creations too so expect player-created items to make their way into the game.”
    • “The main thing that differentiates H1Z1 from the other great games in the genre is the emphasis we are putting on player ownership and building. We want you to be able to form roving gangs that are headquartered out of an abandoned warehouse that you’ve taken over… or a house you’ve built from scratch after having cut trees down and secured the resources to make it. We are giving players the tools to make their own towns, camps and defenses, and they can decide how to set up their base (which is in the world btw… not instanced).”

All the social features you’d expect from a Sony Online Entertainment game will be present, including “grouping, proximity voice chat, voice chat for your gang, and many other cool social features.”

According to Smedley, the goal is to provide “emergent gameplay” that will allow players to make the world their own any way they want to.

“If you prefer a quiet life as a farmer raising crops… we’re going to make sure your zombie apocalypse fantasy is complete,” Smedley said. “If you’re like me and you want nothing more than to kill everything that moves, by all means see how that goes.”

Sounds like a more expansive Day Z. Id like to see them give the tools to the people but not actually govern the world very much so it gives a "in the hands of the users" experience. Just to see what people can come up with.

I'm curious how they'll do micro-transactions for this game though, assuming since its F2P.

The title post needs more red bold letters and random underlining.

Wearables & Early Access, so far.

    New Info
H1Z1 developer Sony Online Entertainment has made clear its monetisation stance in its zombie survival sandbox game. While it’s free to play, there will of course be payments, and company president John Smedley has discussed his team’s approach in a second Reddit update.

Details of his first H1Z1 Reddit session can be found through the link, and saw him laying down some initial details. It’s a good first start if you’re keen on the project.

But now the issue of money has come up, and Smedley was happy to oblige with some feedback.

“You will be surprised to hear we have intentionally left the decisions about what to monetize until we can hear from you,” he opened. “This isn’t some contrived thing.. I’m being serious. It is a nearly blank slate.
So the floor is open for ideas.”

He then offered the following pointers to help fuel gamer’s opinions and ideas based on internal discussions around H1Z1′s monetisation:

    • 1) This will be a F2P game (after early access). During early access it’s going to cost $19.99 to play.
    • 2) We are not interested in selling weapons. Weapons are only aquired by crafting or exploring and finding one. We are not selling power.
    • 3) The game at it’s core is about survival. Our preference is not to sell ANYTHING that can help with that. If this game is too hard for you play another one. We don’t want to give shortcuts for our core mechanic.
    • 4) Wearables – we DO see wearables as an obvious “heck yes” kind of thing. I think it’s perfectly reasonable to have most wearables be purchaseable. Of course we will still have plenty to craft, find and wear for free.
    • 5) We made this game because we love making games and entertaining our players is why we exist. That being said, we do need to make money. Your ideas are appreciated greatly but if we can avoid the “hey give us everything for free because you owe it to us since you’re a big company and we should get free games” commentary it would help a lot.

Smedley closed, “So with the above in mind, we welcome a serious dialogue about this. We’re listening and if you want to have a say in this, now’s the time.”

Maps will be huge, will expand as the game grows
H1Z1 will feature a huge map when it’s first opened up to users, according to SOE boss John Smedley, but soon after it will become much, much bigger.

Speaking in a follow-up to his post on Reddit, Smedley said the amp editing system will allow the development team to “quickly add massive areas” once it’s clear how people are playing the game.

“On Planetside 2 we made a mistake by making multiple continents before we had a strong enough idea of what worked and what didn’t,” he said on Reddit. “This game is different. We’re doing it smarter.

“When we open up the Early Access there will be a massive map for players to enjoy. Over time (very quickly) they’ll magically just be able to keep going further than they’ve gone before. It’s a very unique way of doing it, but we actually think this is a better way to go.”

Smedley goes on to say player will feel a sense of isolation in the game, as the team is aiming for a “remote and haunting” feel to it, and being scared when another player is seen.

“Your first instinct needs to be to hide,” he said. “If there are 20 players in your view it’s not a very convincing Apocalypse. So, not to worry: Zombie Apocalypse isn’t going to be any fun if it’s like Disneyland on Spring Break and super crowded.

“So how many players per server? Who knows. As we add more land the number of people we can hold on a server goes way up. We’re excited. We have a ton of zombies for you to fight too. You’ll be seeing hordes… oh yes you will.”

Smedley said earlier this month H1Z1 would be fully playable “soon” leading many to believe it will be playable during SOE Live, which takes place at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas August 14-17.

However, E3 2014 takes place in June, so hopefully it will be on-hand at the event.

It kind of sounds like Fallout's maps.

Looks really cool. I tried DayZ again recently and just didn't like it. I hope it's not first person only.

What's up with the name? Isn't it a little insensitive to people that have actually contracted H1N1 and died? What if they called a zombie game something like HIZ where you get an auto-immune disorder after sex that turns you into a zombie. (Please don't steal this idea I'm already working on it) That would be insensitive and thoughtless for a title wouldn't it?

With that logic, every FPS in the past 15 years with titles alluding to WWII or subsequent wars are being insensitive to those who contracted WWII or Subsequent Wars syndromes.

Not insensitive at all, it's rather clever. As was the DayZ naming. Sounds like Daisies

    Structure mechanics details
H1Z1 developer Sony Online Entertainment has revealed new details on its zombie sandbox MMO’s structure-building mechanic, wildlife eco-system and combat at E3 2014.

Ahead of its Steam Early Access release, you can check out the H1Z1 E3 2014 trailer to get a glimpse of Sony’s harrowing, uncompromising world.

Though its world is savage and similar to that found in Bohemias’s DayZ, senior designer Jimmy Whisenhunt has discussed some of its vital changes with PCGamesN.

“In the beginning, we just wanted to do sandbox games,” he began before explaining some of the finer yet stark survival changes, such as having to boil water before drinking it from a lake, drying off your clothes so you don’t get sick and being aware of nature’s ecosystem. There are wolves in the world, for example, that will attack players, deer and zombies, but serve as a food source for players. It’s the circle of death man.

Players can also make structures starting from flimsy homes to fortresses and even what SOE calls the Governor’s Mansion. We’re guessing that once this particular homestead is erected that everyone will want a bed to sleep in within its walls. That’s going to lead to a lot of in-fighting if what we’ve learned from The Walking Dead is any measure.

“Once you start building these fortresses and the governor’s mansion and all that stuff, eventually resources are going to start getting scarce,” Whisenhunt added, and so groups will need to move on to hunt for more resource-rich lands, leaving their structures behind. The neat thing is, trees that were chopped down to make those homes will grow back, wildlife will return and the whole process starts over.

I want to play this on PS4, but honestly, the lack of updates has made feel like this was never going to happen. I also don't want to pay to play this early.
