They had missiles that could do this a long time ago.
Let's not get too amazed by missile technology - this is a damn commercial airliner, it's not like it's taking fucking evasive maneuvers.
in before usa starts implementing cool devices on all future builds.
Read liveblogs, don't expect anything concrete until heads of state deliver statements. Times like this misinformation flies hard and fast and gets parroted too often to provide anything reliable. There's no real use in trying to form a connection with an event from four months ago when a much more recent event has more overlapping features.
So did these separatists think the commercial plane was a military plane and accidentally shot it down? Or are they assholes?
I personally believe it was an accident regardless of who fired it. The problem in my belief however lies in having the competency to fire said missile. If they can fire something that can hit an airliner at 32,000~33,000 feet it would mean they would have to have been able to discern that it was a commercial airliner and not military aircraft.
personally i look forward to our mutant carrot overlords
Putin>> Well uh, yeah. America has accidently shot down a civilian airliner (see: Iran Air 555) before so...
We'll pay everyone some small pittance years down the road for our proxy fuckup.
If they aren't trained to recognize 1) IFF transponder readouts, 2) EW emissions (if they have the capability), or 3) have flight plans, then they were prolly shooting at anything that came into "their" space.
It probably went something like this:
Russian dude 1: "Hey! Radar says there is plane!"
Russian dude 2: "It must be those Ukrainian dogs."
Russian dude 1: "We fire missile!"
Russian dude 2: "Now we drink vodka and dance!"
No really. It probably did.
Airspace maps show the de facto no fly zone over Eastern Ukraine. You can see the extent of the detours air traffic controllers have to improvise.

Or sad/ironic if that pic was from the plane..
Pilot Parker was on this plane!?
