    Ghibli shuts down animation production

Source (in Japanese, but it's directly from a shareholder's meeting)

Their last film flopped and frankly speaking the state of 2D animation worldwide isn't great, let alone in a country as saturated in it as Japan.

Ghibli itself will continue to distribute films/TV shows but the animation is being done out-of-house.

Still, the end of an era.

I know the phrase gets thrown around a lot sarcastically, but this truly is a dark day indeed.

Might need to change your tune guys about this. Mind this is according to a Kotaku article which means take this with a grain of salt.

But two bit summary; They're taking a break and reorganizing before they do it again. Break/breather could be perm or just a year or two while they rethink how they do things.

Yes, hold your breath. The only source for that "closure" are those pictures which aren't really speaking of closure. The fact that no japanese newspaper is picking it up is another indication that it really isn't as drastic as english sites are making it sound. Studio Ghibli shutting down would be all over the news in Japan.

some other info is pushing to them maybe moving to old style. They will only hire for short periods of time and only when needed. Someone said they have 3 movies in production as well as a TV thing going on. Is that true? if so it might hold some merit that this is a downsize to a much smaller company rather then a closer of the full animation studio.

Guess it is mostly just wait and see at this moment.

Some updated/new translations say that Toshio Suzuki only “mused” that the studio production will be dismantled. He emphasized that the studio is seriously considering restructuring for now.

That makes a lot more sense, given the incredibly poor revenue the last two movies have seen.

The key thing here is that first kanji. He's talking about them taking a break, not shutting down for good. Probably restructuring/downsizing at the same time. Miyazaki leaving was huge. Even after the break, there's still a possibility that we won't be getting any more full feature gibli movies.

The key to this is to recognize that with a single exception Ghibli's entire commercial output is feature film animation. Marnie bombed hard. Ghibli usually releases a movie every 2-3 years. If they're stopping production work on feature length films we're talking about a 'break' that at minimum will mean four to five years without anything from the studio. Also note they have a bit of a bad reputation for cultivating talent from within, and none of their senior directors seem to have the vision that Miyazaki had. If/when it comes back, it may not be glorious.
