It seems the word "gay" has been glamorized, much like how "nigga" is glamorized now -- everyone says it, usually in subtle jokes and normal conversation. It's quicker on the tongue to say than "homosexual", and most people of this sexual orientation don't mind it at all. Ironically, the word "faggot" no longer holds much of a connotation with these same people -- it's more attributed to an "asshole" a "loser" an "idiot" or a just in general stupid person. The shortened form "fag" still however holds a very negative connotation (comparable to the original form "nigger"), mostly with groups of devout religious groups who just love to hate on anyone who's different.
