    Hard Drive Rattling

Turned my PC on today and hear massive rattling noise from one of my HDDs.

I have my OS on SSD so I'm not too worried.

I have 2 HDDs though. I dont know which of the two is rattling. All tests I have ran on both are showing no errors. Could it be a loose screw?

The rattling noise dies down after about 7min after boot and is no longer audible. I loaded games off both HDDs and hear no noise.

Is there a specific program to diagnose these situations? I guess I can open up case for next cold boot to see which is rattling.

If you hear noises coming from your hard disk drive, back up everything you can as quickly as you can.

Conventional wisdom follows that you should back up whichever of the two, if not both, right away. To diagnose: disconnect one of the power from one of the hard drives and boot the system a couple of times, switch HDD's and repeat until you figure out which one. Immediately back that one up and throw it away.

There is no such thing as a loose screw in a hard drive. Backup data -> RMA

But there can be loose screws in the case that hold the HDD and let it vibrate more than usual.
Aside from the already mentioned "backup now!" you could just hold a finger against each of the drives to see if that stops the rattling. If it does, probably loose screw. If not, prepare for a dieing HDD.

Gave 5$ to bg and all I could think of was this lousy title.

-If you're sure the HDD are causing this, disregard-

Fans can sometimes oscilate and cause vibration on the case, wich makes a rattling noise. It "could" be that whenever you boot up, the fans rattle until they get seated again.
