I think part of what is confusing me is there isn't an index file in the list folder but instead a separate index file in each of the subfolders in the lists folder. So am I like changing each one and putting the new file in each of those subfolders?

yes.
if you change the one in the NPC folder, then the changed list only applies to the NPC tab in AV. the NPC tab is the most useful for displaying npc models and ws effects.. but equipment comes out screwy.
if you want to look for images, then u'd need to put the new list into the Images folder accordingly.
the trickiest is the PC / equipment one, because the way the lists are structured there is more complicated. thats why i usually just do a run thru using a hume model only.

none. AV is a an audio visual viewer. you can try POLutils but i dont know what the dat number to search through is
