Anyone know exactly what's going on here? Something about an update to the SE Token? And telling us to disable it? Is SE removing tokens from the accounts?

Says something about an update, but if you can't DL the update you have to remove the token from your account?

It says that the app is being updated. If you are unable to update, they give instructions on how to properly disable and reenable the app.

On Dec. 4, 2014, in order to add usability features such as language selection, the iOS/Android app "SQUARE ENIX Software Token" will receive a version update.

Current users of the Software Token app should update via the App Store/Google Play as soon as the version update is available.

If you are unable to perform the version update normally after Dec. 4, you will need your "Emergency Removal Password" to remove the Software Token linked to your account before uninstalling and reinstalling the app.

Ok well, than, I'm going to assume that since I don't play FFXI on my iphone that this update does not pertain to me... so I shall ignore that post on playonline.

It's just an app that generates tokens, so you don't have to own the old plastic keychain tool that did the same thing.

I switched to the iPhone app when it became apparent the battery on my original keychain token was running very low.

According to Vasco.com (the company that makes the tokens) the battery life is about 7 years.

So, in the update notes it mentions locating your emergency removal password in your account, under "Token Usage Status", but I do not see this when I login to my account. Is there another location to find the emergency removal password? I copied the update notes below pertaining to this information.


Locating your Emergency Removal Password:

(1) Log in to the Square Enix Account Management System with your Square Enix ID, password, and One-Time Password.

(2) The Emergency Removal Password can be found on the page after logging in under the section “Token Usage Status”.

What's the life span of token keychain? I don't want to one day find it with a dead battery and be locked out.

Mine that I ordered when they first released them is dead and won't turn on anymore. My account says the token is linked at the FFXI login screen, but since they switched me from a JP to an NA SquareEnix ID in 2011, I've not needed to use my token to generate codes.

For the person asking about FFXI on an iPhone, no, it's so your iPhone or Android phone can replace the security token. Since you can recharge the battery on your phone, unlike the token, it's a more long-term solution.
