Price 500 to 1k... Preference as far as Nikon vs canon? Doesn't really matter, what I want is to be able to take action pics of my daughter's soccer games.
This is what I'm looking at on Amazon, I just don't know if it will perform

Are you going to use/buy different lenses? If not there are really good point and shoot cameras, with great zoom and shutter speed. Check out the high end cybershot Line from sony or the comparable lines among competitors.

    the d3200 is great though

check these options, i like sony cams cus their video is known to be great.

If you're going to spend that much money skip the bridge camera and go DLSR. I'd recommend something like this: Canon Rebel 3Ti

As far as Nikon vs Canon, for a beginner it comes down moreso to ergonomics IMO. I recommend that you go to Best Buy and hold the cameras and find which are more comfortable in your hands.

Both manufacturers make cameras at the same price point with roughly the same features. For example, Nikon's analog to the T3i that Jefe posted is the D5100 (which is actually the camera that I use). Keep in mind that both of these cameras are a bit old and have more updated models. Nikon is coming out with the D5500 and I believe Canon is up to the T6i.

Also, I'd factor in buying a zoom lens into your budget. Most entry level cameras come with a 18-55mm kit lens which isn't very useful for getting pictures of your daughter playing sports unless you actually go out onto the field and stand a few feet away from her. You want a lens that is at least 200mm has a fast autofocus motor for taking fast moving shots.

Everything that Xerlic said is great information. Also don't discount bridge cameras completely some of them are extremely capable and compete quite nicely with DSLR's Take a look at the Sony a6000 a very good camera.

Also the image quality between bodies is very close so in general it is better to spend more of your budget on nice lenses than a nicer body and cheap out on the lenses. I shoot Nikon fyi but the nikon vs. canon debate is for people who don't know much about photography.

Sony, fujifilm, olympus, canon, nikon all make amazing cameras in your price range that take similar quality pics. Go out and play with cameras and find the one that is the most comfortable for you to hold has controls in the places you like and isn't too heavy for you.
