They're probably going to do what they've always done, ignore the problem and leave it to third party developers to handle it.

Maybe take some half-assed too-little-too-late measures at some point, but ultimately be less effective than the programs people have been using for years.

Add in sanctioned means of buying gil, and slam harder against those still buying it from the RMT. Trading RMT buying serial keys for new spam accounts with players paying $14.99 for time card.
Just need to look at what happened with the promise bracelets. It was pretty rampant how many people jumped on the "legal" gil buying train. Obviously RMT still existed but that def had to cut into their profits. The time card thing that was implemented in Tera helped curb RMT early on (and it's very minimal now since it's F2P).

If it works like Tera when you buy "Time" you get an in-game item that when you use it provides you with added playtime instead of paying a subscription. Since you purchase these from the company itself and you can sell them on the AH it effectively gives people a way to RMT without using a third party go between.

Rift did something similar with REX. You spent increments of $10 to buy REX which could either be used in the in-game shop for glamour items/mounts or leveling/out-dated raid gear. The other alternative was you could convert the REX into an exchangeable item that people sold on the AH. A ton of people spent money for the glamour things and some did it to make in-game money.

Sanctioned rmt will always be effective. SE should make everything on mogstation virtual items that can be sold in game, on ward. From server transfer tickets, Crysta packs, to Odin mount. That alone will curb rmt significantly. Also, they should add simple social filters that will rid players of harassment entirely. Like only ls, fc, friendslist, party members, alliance members, can send tells. Easy peasy

Well, again, they already don't allow you to send tells in any dungeon to "prevent harassment." I wouldn't want to see a version of this game where virtually all tells are blocked.

You wouldn't have to. They would be social filters so if you wanted it unfiltered you're good to go. If you're frustrated with the harassment, you're good to go.

If he were to release some serious and hard content, with new/casual players complaining, I want him to make a statement of how it's time to challenge the player base with harder stuff. Tell them that we have come a long way and it's can be something you do or not, but it is for the more raid focused players. He can be nice about it but really tell everyone to quit being little bitches, it's a video game, get good.

The real answer is that it's just not that simple. There are already enough roadblocks to convenience put in this game to stop RMT; I'd hardly say the problem with the devs is that they aren't willing to go far enough.
They will just go back to stealing accounts. That's what they did in FFXI.

With tokens being around from day 1 I doubt there's much to be gained that way.

If you've played long enough to have enough gil worth stealing, you've probably got a token.

Doesn't XIV also require e-mail verification if it detects an unknown IP logging in when there's no token on the account?

Yep, also the main way people stole accounts in ARR's early days was SE left the client session wide open, so people were able to inject code in-game near certain players or players who interacted with the MB or Retainer Bell and basically knocked them offline and took their account.

Whether or not that was fixed we'll find out if SE chooses to add higher restrictions.

Because OTP have never been hacked through before.

Because that would be worth the time and effort.

It took all of what, 15-20 minutes for someone to do? I'd have to go digging for the article back in 2010-2011 or whatever, or look for whatever was posted not to long ago on the OF about the concerns that people have.

In short your phones OTP is slightly more secure than having the generic token that gets shipped to you that is likely already been ready to be taken advantage of the moment they're made active.

Why aren't they (or anyone) doing it then.
