Yeah, I've been keeping an eye on that story. Thankfully, looks like it was very late and the explosions all centered around the warehouses of the port itself, so the death toll is surprisingly low for explosions of that magnitude. Last I heard was 50 confirmed dead, with around 200 projected. ~120 of those are thought to be firefighters responding to the initial fire. Casualties (injuries etc) are up into the hundreds, though. Probably going to hit thousands.
Reddit has a live tracker for it. Shits fucking horrifying. Those explosions are huge, and you can see an entire chunk of the city go up. And it was chemical storage so there's cyanide and all sorts of other shit leaking out now.
Right now, there's a good chunk of property they can't even check for bodies, so that death count is likely to rise further. They called back the firefighters because it was just too damn risky to go in with the potential toxins/secondary explosions, meaning it'll likely burn till it runs out of fuel while they stay safely on the perimeter to contain any potential spread.
Moar explosion video

Can't seem to get the embed to work properly so click the fucking link.
Explosion was seen from space.

Wait for the second explosion. Turn down volume.

Separate thread should be made , I would but I'm on phone. This is a chemical explosion and I would be interested to hear the potential environmental impact it may have.
Good idea.
the videos are unreal.
yeah im surprised the death toll is as low as it seems to be. the state media is of course only reporting confirmed deaths, but even the independent projections are "only" ~200 dead. explosions that big, i was expecting deaths in the thousands.
fortunate time of night, i guess. also seems like the area was mostly evacuated in time? i know a large portion of the projected deaths are firefighters who responded to the initial fire.
This shit is nuts! Watching the videos gives me 9/11 chills when I saw the whole thing from the roof of my apartment building.
I'm not really going to trust the reporting out of China until more time has passed. But it does seem if it was 1k to 10k order of magnitude or more, we'd be hearing something somehow.
But if a chain of comments from reddit is to be believed (sorry, I don't have a link), because Tianjin is a MAJOR port, there may be some serious economic damage resulting from this explosion. There was at least one company that is probably going under because of some insurance shenanigans.
I believe I heard this registered on the Richter scale too
Mid 2.
For reference, in L.A., anything under 3.8 can barely be felt unless you're right on top of it (and it's shallow).
Edit: Also, in hindsight, preempting a penis joke out of this post.
Actually because of the explosion it reminded me more of the Boston bombing, that same hollow BOOM sound when the explosions went off. It took me right back to watching videos from that day.
protip: dont store mini nukes in the middle of city
There was surprisingly little (at least in the videos I watched). I mean I remember watching the footage of 9/11 but it was the sound that really got me on the Boston bombing track. I don't remember hearing that sound on 9/11. There are a lot of things I remember, but they were almost entirely visual.
Some of the chrmicals stored there react explosively with water and considering the subsequent explosions, firefighter casualties, and fire chief pulling his guys out until he had info on what was in there makes me think the firefighters went in there hosing down potassium or something
Biggest shot i ever did was back in iraq 05. It was only 14,000 lbs NEW (net explosive weight). We were miles away though. That was a mighty big boom. Equivalent to fatman going of on Nagasaki. Just spent 3 weeks learning about nukes at sandia nat. Labs. I would not like to do the post blast on that scene
