Alternative to Lamps?

I was wondering if anyone suggestions on alternative to lamps? Basically the apartment I may be moving into doesn't have a ceiling light at all in the living room so the main source of light is the outside and lamps. I was wondering if there was anything similar to a ceiling light that plugged into an outlet that I could install?


I've been googling around for a bit and can't find too much looking through home depot so I was not sure if there was a term for it that I'm missing or if anyone else has been in a similar situation.

Check your outlets. Many homes/apartments' living rooms are wired so that a few outlets are on a lightswitch so you can do exactly that with lamps.

Unless it's the lamp form you object to. Closest I can get that won't require mounting (at which point just put in a room light) are hydra lamps like this one. I have one in my apartment, behind/above my entertainment center. It lights up the whole room... but it hogs electricity and pumps out heat like crazy so i rarely use it.

I can vouch for these. The light output is amazing for it being pointed at the ceiling. But maybe thats the whole trick, reflecting it back down and around.

I had several of these when I first moved out of college. Pretty good if you are looking for a solution on the less expensive end.

I hate ceiling light, but these ones that point at the ceiling creates a very nice ambience in my experience. Not too bright that it lights up the place, but creating a nice homely feel equivalent to old-age candles nearly, minus flickering.
Bonus points for getting a 2 way one with a reading attachment (a smaller light that shoots down)!

I have no real quarrel with lamps, but I really like ceiling downward lighting with a light bulb swap. Ceiling lighting to me feels overall brighter and for some reason how energetic I am is correlated to how bright the room is so I know if the room isn't super bright I'll probably be a bit lethargic

The unit does have outlets on a light switch though for reference that's why I was looking at something that can mimic it. I'm definitely considering all alternatives and how I can properly light the room. I like the orb thing but I feel like the color of the filter will dim the light a bit more than I like (probably why I’m biased against most lamps), but this is the type of alternative I was looking for are there other things that are similar or do they have a specific name to them?

OT, I'd go with the tall floorstanding lamps as well, unless you want to drill holes and hide wires and stuff. Those IKEA lamps are probably going to be plenty of light with a couple. ^^
