Has the Rinnegan not always been able to absorb chakra? Isn't that how that giant gate from the six Paths worked?

It's a part of the abilities of the rinnegan, but it's not always active no. There's 6 unique rinnegan abilities, and each one can be turned on and off as it were, since they all require or otherwise interact with chakra.

Surprised kishi threw that one in there, the last time some one drained Narutos chakra they turned to stone because of the nature energy; but I'm sure when it comes to anime time they'll be sure to focus on the fact that Naruto is out of sage mode before Sasuke absorbed his chakra.

One of the six paths of Pain was able to do it. Think it was called Gakidou no jutsu or something like that.

Nagato did it in the fight against Naruto and Itachi.

Madara did it in one of his first troll moments where he revealed having the Rinnegan.

So there's a precedent: As irritating as the Sauce is, can't really say it's extra powers snuck in for free.

Fair enough. I guess it just feels that way since Sasuke never even has to train or have any indication of being told his powers exist before they showed up.

That's what being a genius is all about in JP stories. The only time you'll see them training hard is initially, when they explain that they have to train hard to carry the expectations that being called a genius confers. After that, though, its nothing but hax powerup after hax powerup.

Hmm..the Sauce's training, as far as I can think:

Kakashi training him (which, if you consider everything, means he got exposure to elemental chakra pretty freaking early on)
Time-skip training: We have no idea what kind of training Orochimaru put him through, but between that and Kabuto drugging him up, we can conclude it's a lot better than what Naruto got from J-Man (he developed Kirin during that time)

The "hax" power-ups I'd say for him are:

Cursed Seal (right before timeskip)
Rinnegan, to an extent

I mean hell, if anyone should be pissed about this all, it's Vegeta.

Start with the main theme, when they go megazord switch to RFS then back again to the main theme when naruto goes pwn on sauces ass next chapter. Thats the only way the music for this fight should go
