HL2.exe has stopped working.

I just bought the orange box and cant manage to play any games but Portal. I get an error message "TF2.exe has stopped working". The most annoying is TF2. Right before it lets me join a room it crashes on me. Has anyone had this problem and managed to fix it? I've been googling all day and havn't found anything that works.

Lets start with the basics: Verify your game caches, allow HL2.exe (all of them) in your firewall, update your video drivers, make sure Steam.dll isn't anywhere else but in the Steam folder, try running with the launch options "-nosound -window -dxlevel 81 +mat_forcehardwaresync 0", and thats it or now.

Vista Home, and I've done all that you've listed. I got it to work for a little bit but then encountered the same problem about 2 hours later.

im not sure if this is in vista home but right click on computer, go to properties, then go to performance, click settings and goto data execution prevention, click on add and add hl2.exe

On portal Im getting the error:

No dice, still gave me the error.

go to start -> in the start search, type in msconfig, go to services, click on hide all microsoft in the bottom and then disable all of that. Then try to run the game again.

I managed to get Portal working by setting -dxlevel 81 in the Launch options, its working so far so I dont know if I solved it or not.
