I find this to be a better program. It hasnt been updated in years, but supposedly are working on it (check the blog), but does the job great, especially in large server environments. WinDirStat - Windows Directory Statistics

    it's not a software but a website

Ninite Easy PC Setup and Multiple App Installer - Great For Win7 Upgrades

What is does is offer you almost 50 software that you can download.

so you choose the software you want and check the list and the website will make you an auto-installer, the auto-installer will auto download + install every app you checked.

    Love that website :D

Just saw this post on LH and seemed pretty interesting and handy. Haven't tried it out yet, hoping not to have a reason to anytime soon.

    - WhoCrashed

In the same vein, this is a handy app for diagnosing BSODs.

Also throwing out a recommendation for Microsoft Security Essentials as a dead-simple AV. Not much in the way of customization outside of scan schedules, but it was rated very highly among free AVs. http://arstechnica.com/security/news...al-winners.ars

Nice list for Mac users so far. I tend to use and recommend the following:

FlipSide - Too lazy or busy to be bothered with manually rebooting your Mac OS and holding down the option key for boot camp? /Rejoice!
    From: ProjectAppleTree

Mind Node - Decent Mind Mapping Software
    From: MindNode

SoundFlower - Soundflower is a Mac OS X (10.2 and later) system extension that allows applications to pass audio to other applications. Great for ripping songs.
    From: Cycling74

TinkerTool - TinkerTool is an application that gives you access to additional preference settings Apple has built into Mac OS X. This allows to activate hidden features in the operating system and in some of the applications delivered with the system.
    From: Bresink

I couldn't paste URLs, but they are easy to find.

Found an article that is very useful in optimizing and tweaking your Windows 7 experience:

Five Best Windows 7 Tweaking Applications (Lifehacker)

There's a program in there called Windows 7 Manager, and while it costs $40, people savvy in the file sharing trade can find it. It's VERY nice to have. Comes with the main program, and a whole whack of smaller utilities that I can't believe I got around without! Highly recommend you to check it out when you have the chance.

Planning to check out 7 Manager sometime soon, seems pretty handy. A different program (freeware) ended up winning Lifehacker's Hive Five, but the results are based around user votes so it's only telling what people are using the most and not necessarily what's best. (Paid software almost never wins)

While this isn't an app or utility, it is really handy for finding such things so I thought I'd pass it along if it hasn't already been mentioned: http://alternativeto.net/

The site is used for, you guessed it, finding (better) alternatives to programs you're using now. It's dependent on users to up-down-vote for software so some categories/groups can be a little slim, but hopefully it'll become fleshed out even further.

There's an option to transfer music from it and to it but I've never used the transfer to option. Let me know how it works.

So, after years of apparently not knowing wtf is up, I just got Mplayer for this new laptop and it's like my life has suddenly changed. This is the best there is right?

Using the Tales of Vesperia movie in blu-ray as a measuring stick at the moment. I can't imagine it getting any better than it is now but I don't know shit about shit. Are there better players / certain settings I should be running if I want max quality and don't give a shit about lag?

Slow reply, but as a fellow Mplayer user for a couple years, I have found it to be the best by far. I used cccp+mpc for a long time, but mplayer is better. (at least for anime, which is about all I watch)

I use the build this guy does. He puts smplayer and mplayer together in a nice package, and keeps it updated.

If you're using Ubuntu, here's what to use for current'ish versions. https://launchpad.net/~rvm/+archive/mplayer

Suggestions for a good, free media converter (From like AVI to MP4, GIF, or whatever) and possibly a program that could then let you cut and edit?

You could try http://www.freemake.com/free_video_converter/ - It'll allow you to import video, cut it and convert it in one process; really pretty simple and functional program. Doesn't work with animated gifs, though, if that was what you were referring to.

http://code.google.com/p/gdipp/ - Really, really love this.

The gdipp (codename) project is a replacement of the Windows text render, which brings to you the effect of text like Mac OS and Linux distributions. It is easy to use with ignorable overhead, and it is fully customizable.
