Looking at buying a Pet Bird, any suggestions?

This will be my first pet, I had a dog for 2 weeks when i was 8, i dont count that. I want a medium sized bird, that can talk, but doesnt have too, and is not too noisy as i live in a apartment building. Im on a budget and i dont really wanna spend over 100$ on the bird, but if its a good beginner pet that matches my descprition thats cool. Just from looking at sites and different bird types, i like cockatiels and lovebirds, but i eventually wanna get a african gray, this is just from reading about them. I have no first hand experience with birds, but my friend says they suck as pets, they shit on walls, are messy and loud. I know this is not true about all pets, but what is the general reality about them and what do yall suggest?

My biological mother takes care of birds. I stayed over at her house for like 2 weeks, and from my experience there I'd have to say they are horrible pets. They never shut up, they shit everywhere, you can't play with them, and if they get loose they're gone forever. I can't think of a worse pet other than pets that can actually eat you alive like gators.

I'd suggest a ferret. They're easy to look after, they're quiet, you can train it to poop in a litter box, they're playful, they look forward to interacting with you, and you can keep them in a cage for an entire day or two if you absolutely have to.

I have had tons of pets ranging from an armadillo, cats, dogs, rabbits, frogs, snakes, etc, and my ferret is probably my most favorite. Other than my pembroke welsh corgi that passed away a year ago . The only problems with ferrets is that they're fragile and they get into everything.

I had a Cockatiel. It was a loud and dirty creature. Other than that it was a fun pet. But yeah, to this day I still have no idea how it shit on the wall a foot from its cage. Also it had a habit of holding on to the inside of the wall in its cage and flapping its wings really fast(stretching probably) thus causing the air to fill with them small light feathers, almost like dander. The noise can be controlled, I trained my bird to shut the fuck up when told or get the blanket over the cage(they fear the dark).

Get a monkey, name it spank, teach it how to smoke and play a grinder.

And make lots of money... oooh and dress it up in a tuxedo. That'd be amazing.

I've basically grown up around 2 mexican red-headed amazons, 1 umbrella cockatoo, 1 cockatiel, a spattering of budgies and finches..

They will, if you are not an extremely patient person, cause you a lot of stress. Very messy, requiring a lot of attention. The only way to get them to shut up is to basically sit there and stare at them until they get nervous. If you shout back, they'll only scream louder.

I can't wait to fucking move out so I have a night of peace

Re: Looking at buying a Pet Bird, any suggestions?

Birds aren't necessarily terrible pets, I had some growing up. They do have a tendency to make noise, though covering the cage can help with that at times. Keep in mind that you need to pay attention to them and play with them daily. While they're out, they'll fly around and crap on stuff.

It doesn't sound like a lot to do, but birds are reasonably long lived. I mean, an African Grey may well outlive you. Might be easy to spend a couple hours a day or more playing with one right when you get it, but 30 years from now...ehh....

Even a parakeet has around the same lifespan as a dog.

If you spend a lot of time with a bird, they can be very friendly and fun. If neglected, they can get mean, which makes retraining even harder.

I would say to maybe consider a small rodent or something as a first pet. They're cheap, can be fun to play with, and some are rather smart (rats especially). They also only tend to live for maybe around 3 years or so, which means you can better figure on whether it's something you can care well for its entire life.

You do have some odor associated with 'em, but not really any more than birds would, especially if you keep the cage clean. Barring a squeaky exercise wheel or something, they don't make much noise, and while they do crap on stuff when playing outside the cage, it cleans up easily.

Ferrets, as mentioned, are quite fun pets too. Very lively and playful. They need a bit more space n' stuff though, and they have a bit more of an odor.

If you're really set on a bird, get a parakeet or something small. Personally though, if I want to get a pet that'll live for 10-14 years and I need to spend time with daily, I'll get a dog...

If I hadn't made plan to study abroad I'd be getting a Sugar Glider. It's basically a flying marsupial indigenous to Australia. It's fucking cute as hell, has a bushy tail similar to a squirrels and flies. Oh ya, did I mention it sleeps during the daytime so you can carry it around under your shirt against your chest because they love being next to a heartbeat. Ultimate pet? Yes.

Oh ya, they live about as long as your average bird would I think like 10-15 years.

Sugar gliders are super fucking cute, I'd have to say a hamster (don't laugh) is a cool first pet too if you don't want a hugely smart pet that will do tricks. When I was a kid I trained mine to sit on my shoulder like a parrot, they're fun to pet and pretty active, plus they LOVE attention in the evenings when they're most awake. Don't keep them in a bedroom though because they love to chew the bars of their cages at night, it keeps their teeth healthy but keeps you awake. Plus their poo is small and dry, so easy to clean up. The best things about birds:

    1) The taste wonderful deep fried.
    2) It's fun to let them out of their cage when a ceiling fan is on. Yes, I've actually seen this happen, and it was everything I thought it could be.

    Otherwise, don't bother.
