BG - your help is needed to vacation, or to not vacation?

I promise this to be more sensible than the last person who wanted advice on whether to take a vacation or not.

here's the skinny...I work full-time, am in school full-time, I haven't been on a vacation in 4 years...haven't been on a REAL vacation in like...6 years?

seeing as how I've been living on my own, and paying my way for a while now, I'm wary to spend large chunks of money that I dont "need" to spend. I'm sitting on $3,200 or so in my savings account, which considering being 24, the work and school thing, I don't think is a bad figure at the moment. So I could tap the ole piggy bank for about $1,000 or so and take a little vacation, but I dunno if I should. While it would be nice to get away for a few days, spending that kind of money to hop on a plane, sit by a beach or pool, drink, nod off, and maybe get into some random trouble doesn't seem all that worth it. the other option is what I'd say is traveling, not vacationing. plopping myself into a random place, here or far away for a few weeks, with clothes, money, and back packing...while cheaper, and more of an experience...I want a vacation, and not spending my days looking at maps and translating dictionaries. the big problem with either (and probably biggest reason I'm against either) is I cant find anyone to go with. either excursion seems somewhat pointless solo. Sure, it would be fun to just beach bum at some resort for a few days, but it seems like frivolous spending when I can more or less do the same thing here and just call it "taking a week off from work and going to the beach everyday" as opposed to "vacation"

I went on a 3 month vacation , was the greatest thing that could ever happen to me, all of a sudden everything that was super stressful in my life became nothingness really like, I would stress out over things and be mega pissed if say, my PC froze or if there was a blackout , now I'm fine when little things like that happen and just deal as they come.

I say take a vacation rather than travel, travel will let you see more sights, but it requires more work from you. Vacation will be more special to you since you'll be able to connect with the one area more freely instead of hurrying between locations within days.

Before you do either though, RESEARCH where you are going, my cousins who took a holiday a few months ago went to a "4 star" resort on an island off the coast of Queensland Australia , they got little service, they would wake up in the morning with lizards on their bedsheets and in their oven, etc etc.

Maybe I read your post incorrectly, but it seems as though you've given like five or more reasons why you either don't want to, shouldn't, or have no desire to go on a vacation. If this is the way you think, then why waste the time and money? Wait until you have no obligation and alot more money to spend, and someone to spend the time with and the extra money you've made on. I'm sure it would be a more enjoyable experience to go someplace extravagant with someone you care about than if you were to go alone and have to witness all the happy couples/pairs/groups/whatever.

there's a fair nugget of truth to that. initially, going into the summer i had no aspirations to take a vacation, maybe a few long weekends, but thats it. had been humoring with the idea of buckling down the past few days, and considering taking a vacation just for the sake of taking one. think here i was looking more for ideas, than advice. and the cruise idea was a cool one, did a little looking about on orbitz...of course the initial "base" price radically changes, by a a lot, once you pick a departure date and flight to/from cruise...the $500 or so they initially tell you is in reality more like $1600 or so

If you don't want to go alone, then wait until you have someone to go with. Personally, I don't mind heading off alone, or traveling alone, but meeting up with an old friend on the other side of the country.

You can also just stay around your area and do something you normally wouldn't. You live in New York, it can't be that hard to find something different.

Edit: Seriously though, I'd say if you can without putting yourself out too much (1k seems reasonable) and not losing job / school / etc... go for it. Only live once and all that jazz.

I am taking a vacation this weekend! =)

Friends and I are driving to a lake that is about 2 hours away, to just lay out in the sun, hang in the water, and relax. We are also staying through Monday, so it is an extended weekend. I am very excited. Little trips like that are always fun.

Then in mid July my friend and I are driving down to San Jose for a concert (live in WA), then spending the weekend driving back up the coast line.
