I don't see it being the shifter because what do we gain by knowing that he shifted now. If it was just the shifter why not give us a huge mind fuck 5 eps from now going holy shit its been the shifter the whole time. But if its Charlie beta, then they would need to establish when he showed up to dump charlie alpha plus it would then lead to confusion and theories about what happened. My take on it anyhoo.

The shifter taking Charlie's place is really the only conclusion to draw. They showed us now so that for the rest of the season there's going to be dramatic tension every time "Charlie" and Olyvia are alone together.

Idk if that makes sense, and it really is a preference thing I guess, like to me the shifter being revealed letter would be a better story.
And I think it being charlie beta is still viable, not as likely as it being the shifter, but viable. The transformation process when shown on screen was hardly instantaneous, painful and whatnot, plus time to change clothes and retrieve one body and hide another just seems a bit too unlikely.
Also I've been up for about 44 hours now, so when I wake up in the morning (afternoon probably tbh) this might not make any sense.

Either that or it's other world Charlie having them think it's their Charlie. Wouldn't it make perfect Fringe sense if our Charlie was working for the Fringe Dept, and the beta Charlie is working for the other rogue company trying to cause chaos and be bad?

I'm not ruling out the shifter thing, I'm just thinking other possibilities. If we are to assume it was the shifter that did all they, they must have some device that sucks the clothes off one victim and puts them on another, cause that was too damn fast, I don't care who it is. I don't know, the whole thing is weird, but I guess that's why I like it.

This whole episode honestly wasn't what I expected. I half (or more than) expected it to just continue from the end of last season with Leonard Nimoy. That'll probably be a whole big thing though, her remembering what he told her in that office.

I don't get how people find a whole other Charlie not mentioned in the whole episode showing up and offing the real Charlie more plausible than a guy trained to fake other people's identities being a quick-change artist.

The sequence of events seems more like Charlie is ambushed by the shape shifter, killed in some way, and then the killer changes his face with him, strips off his clothes, and assumes his identity. He then fired shots into the woman from before to make it appear like 'she' was killed by Charlie.

This is exactly what happened. 'Charlie' is the shape shifter. He set up shop near the furnace and killed whoever got close. All the gunshots were off camera so there's no way to know how much time really passed. In the next episode he uses the same typewriter in the same room to report on getting close to Dunham.

We knew the bad guy last season was an FBI agent long before the characters did. The tension comes from them not knowing and if they figure it out etc. The 'mindfuck' will be if he 'abandons' his cause and fights with them instead of against him.

All the Yahoo article confirmed is that Acevedo wasn't fired during the break and would be back. It does nothing to confirm how many episodes he'll be in.

It looked to me like the shape-shifter played dead after being shot by Charlie a few times, and later ambushed Charlie when everyone left. Just in the way the scenes played out in chronology.

edit: when we see the shape shifter kill his first victim, it's done with a blow to the back of the head. When we see Charlie's body being thrown into the incinerator there are no visible fatal bullet wounds (i.e. to the head or chest), and we do not see the back of his head. That's what I think supports my theory better than what I said before.

Hang on. I'm aware of the rumor and he did not get fired. What I am a little confused about is this whole shape shifter thing.

So the girl the shifter turned into was already dead. The shifter then attacks Olivia, takes 2 bullets and jumps out the window like a champ. Shifter hops down from seeing, blam blam, "Charlie" shoots and kills shifter. If shifter is dead, it cannot presumably change shapes again. Come end of episode, "Charlie" is throwing presumably real Charlie's body in the incinerator. That's what leads me to believe there is another Charlie running around. We already know Peter had an alternate him that died, so maybe this is the other Charlie, and he is evil.

We've seen the other Charlie, in the episode with the Woman that randomly burst into flames, and Olivia was flipping between worlds. And Charlie had a huge old scar on his face.

They have said that there are only two world we are going to go (ours and theirs) so I'm not thinking it's another Charlie, it's the Shape Shifter.

I wonder what they are going to think about the bullets New Chick Agents tagged her with before SS jumped not being in this body, and not being found anywhere. And did the SS strip Charlie first? If not, then judging from the other bodies (or at least the one they examined in detail) he's running around in very yucky pants.
