The baby being born was what was important about it. Probably because it can be used to trigger the machine.
But that could've been achieved without this episode.

I am just starting the episode, and it is fantastic.

FRINGECEPTION
Bleh, anyone have a download/torrent link? Totally forgot it came back this week.
more trippin' Broyles!
I could barely get my face out of my palm long enough to watch more than the first 10 minutes of the episode. Good lord...
The end was awesome
Spoiler: show
Yeah, Olivia changed a lot in this episode.
This episode was like if Inception, Cool World, and The Matrix had a baby.
Finally watched the new episode last night. One of the worst episodes of the entire series, the only good thing to come of it is Olivia's voice will be back to normal.

So I guess Leonard Nimoy could not make it for filming so they went with animation? It sounded like it was his voice, but thought it was odd every time he was in the show it would go to animation.
His body probably couldn't handle the action scenes they wanted to do.
I finally got to watch this today, and it was awesome!!
I've decided I really love the alternate universe episodes, almost as much as I love the non-canon episodes. I really like the team dynamic of Lee/Charlie/Olivia with Astrid doing that weird savant shit, it almost feels like they could just have a spinoff show with those people going on random cases (plus things are so interesting over there, with the Gaudi hotel and the zeppelins... i don't think they even have conventional aircraft over there)
I love how this show has the same feeling that x-files gave me, where non-canon episodes are really awesome, but Fringe has an amazing central narrative too (I got so bored with the alien hybrid shit, in comparison). I just really, really hope they don't play up the Peter-torn-between-Olivias-love-battle thing too much this/next season, since it feels like their relationship can't get too sweet (with either olivia) without feeling overly sappy.
So are we guessing that Walternate gave Fauxlivia's baby Cortexiphan so it will develop an ability? You know for sure that it can use the machine just like Peter, otherwise it would have made almost no sense to give Fauxlivia a baby at all.
edit: oh neat:
Zeppelins 100% More Common
Speaking of geek culture, "Fringe" slips some steampunk atmosphere into the very first images of the alternate universe. When Olivia and the Cortexiphan gang look up through the skylight of the theater, they see not an airplane, but an airship hovering in the sky. It's the viewers' first clue that the characters are in the alternate universe.
Expensive Avocados
Bolivia (the alternate version of Olivia) is amazed when her boyfriend Frank serves avocados at his romantic dinner, since they're so rare and expensive. Same with coffee, which is rationed and almost impossible to acquire. But some guilty pleasures still exist. Olivia's Cortexiphan pal, Sally, stops at a window display in the alternate universe, charmed by the large quantity of Cabbage Patch dolls for sale.
Alternate War Legacies
The Twin Towers still stand. Aruba War veterans need assistance. And as we see in the Season 3 premiere, Martin Luther King Jr. shares the honor of having a park named after him with Black Panther Party leader Eldridge Cleaver. With MLK also on the $20 bill, one has to imagine the vastly different effects of the Civil War, Southern culture, and the Civil Rights Movement in the alternate universe.
No Bono
Bolivia has never heard of Bono. Or the Lindbergh baby. Or President Andrew Jackson. Thank goodness, when she infiltrates our universe, her cohort Newton provides her with a pop-culture reference guide. She's not going to get by thinking Eric Stoltz still starred in "Back to the Future."
"Show-Me" Your ID
Need to ride the bus? Take a cab? Not without a "show-me," the alternate universe version of an ID card. These government-issued cards seem extra important in the alternate universe. Olivia realizes this quickly while she's on the run in the alternate universe, asking Henry the cab driver for his show-me so she can memorize his address in case he decides to turn her in.
Alternate U.S. Geography
Half of California seems to have finally broken off and sunk. Texas is two separate states, while the Carolinas have been combined into one. And Louisiana is still a territory. All are differences in the alternate USA map, seen hanging on the wall when the Fringe Division visits Walternate (the alternate version of Walter, of course) in his office at the Department of Defense.
Advanced Technology, For the Most Part
Bolivia hasn't seen a ballpoint pen since preschool. Walter's gunshot wound heals in hours. Bolivia's partner Lincoln's burns are treated with nanotechnology. Daily flights to the moon are available to the public. Yet with all the advances in technology, Bolivia's boyfriend Frank still has to rush off to fight a smallpox outbreak.
Mixed feelings about these two "Bell episodes". Though the Broyle's high as fuck on drugs was delightful.
