    Unable to detect USB ports

Hey all, recently my USB ports have stopped working. It doesn't read my flash drives or my ipod. I'm running XP and the only thing I've done recently is defragment. Any ideas on how I can fix it? Thanks.

Go into your device manager, and then plug something into a USB port. Does anything change or get added that you can tell?

Do you have a laptop or a desktop?

I hate jumping to conclusions, but 2 of my friends recently had their USB devices start failing on them and quickly blamed the motherboard. This post makes me think it maybe windows update related or a common factor software problem within the ffxi community.

Had same problem with my Ipod before, this was the solution to my issue.

    1. On the Start menu, click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click the System icon.
    3. Click the Hardware tab.
    4. Click Device Manager.
    5. Scroll down the list of devices to the Universal Serial Bus controllers
    6. Click the plus (+) icon next to the Universal Serial Bus controllers.
    7. Double-click one of the indented USB Root Hub entries.
    8. Click the Power Management tab.
    9. Deselect the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" option.
    10. Click the OK button at the bottom of the window.
    11. Restart the computer.

This sorta happened to me. Turns out the power supply that comes with a case is not a good power supply (and lesson learned, always buy a power supply separately).
