Default Absolute must play PC games.

As most who know me on these forums Im heavy into console games and havent really played much PC games, because well Ive never owned a good PC gaming machine, right now all I have is a laptop, its 2 yr's old an it runs WOW fine(when I played), and ffxi, so it can play a good deal of games on it.

The question is what games should I absolutley play, Ive played diablo and fallout 1, never had a chance to play the second one, and having a ahrd time finding the second one. I play almost everything except racing games, wrestling and puzzle games.

    Cave Story
    Rosenkreuzstilette
    Megamari
    Iji
    Bunny Must Die
    Guilty Gear
    Melty Blood
    Orange Box
    STALKER
    Counter Strike: Source
    Starcraft
    Warcraft III & Frozen Throne

Shitloads more, but I guess that's as good a start as any. You should be able to run all of them fine except perhaps Stalker. But use http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest to doublecheck your specs against Orange Box/Counter Strike and Stalker. My old laptop ran the rest fine and it could barely manage 10 FPS on WoW and couldn't even start up FFXI. First 5 are small freeware games, Cave Story is a must play, the rest are good but passable.

Lucas Arts adventure games: Monkey Island series, Sam and Max Hit the Road, Day of the Tentacle to name a few.

I'll start with genres that were rare, nonexistant or badly done on consoles, since I have no idea what you've played. These are listed in order of *my* preference, but I won't claim that everyone will agree, so I've included a bit of commentary on why I chose each. I wouldn't say that you have to play ALL of these, I'm intentionally giving lots of options.

    RTS:
    - Supreme Commander (Totally different style of RTS than Blizzard games, but also excellent)
    - Rise of Nations (Again, different style of RTS, RoN focuses more on economics and research a la Civilization, but is still heavily based around real-time combat and battle)
    - Company of Heroes or World in Conflict (Both more "realistic" military RTSs, involving tanks and army soldiers and such. CoH is WWII, WiC is modern)

    CRPGs:
    - Planescape: Torment (Easily one of the best PC RPGs ever made, D&D-based and *extremely* story-heavy. Set in the Planescape universe, if you're familiar with D&D)
    - Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 (More traditional fantasy RPGing, set in the Forgotten Realms universe, which is your typical elves and goblins stuff.)
    - Neverwinter Nights (Also a Forgotten Realms D&D game, more modern (and 3D) than BG)
    - If you've only played Diablo 1, Diablo II is definitely on this list for obvious reasons
    - Same as above for Fallout 2

    FPS/3PS:
    - Max Payne (Third-person shooter, heavy on the bullet-time and automatic weapons, lots of fun)
    - System Shock 2 (Spiritual predecessor to Bioshock, and arguably better, although obviously with less recent graphics)

    Simulation/Turn-based strategy
    - Civilization IV (It's better than the console port, much more in-depth)
    - Heroes of Might and Magic IV and V (IV is 2D, V is 3D, they're both turn-based 'world domination' games with a heavy RPG element)

I'm sure I'll think of more, but that's a decent overview of those genres, at least.

If you're considering System Shock 2 I'd look into the custom mods out there. A lot of people have taken it to update the SS2 graphics.

Google says it's called System Shock 2 Rebirth.

Deus Ex is worth a look too.

These were both already said but....

Neverwinter Nights - The absolute cream of the crop of PC RPGs imo, especially if you snag one of the later releases with the expansions.
Max Payne 1/2 - Awesome games, I've played the ever living hell out of both of them. Assuming you can still hunt it down, look for a Matrix Lobby shootout mod as well, which was always amazingly entertaining. You'll also get a better understanding of the movie coming out soon (I'm guessing, really have no idea how close to the games it will be). You'll definitely want to play them in order because the 2nd one will be confusing as all hell story wise if you jump into it first.

I just read the OP again and realized your machine's a few years old, so I'd suggest checking out Total Annihilation instead of Supreme Commander. TA is a few years older, but the same basic gameplay. SC is probably a better game, but it also would rape a 2 year old laptop. I believe World in Conflict and Company of Heroes would probably give you a hard time too, but I'm not sure what to suggest in their place.

They're definitely not MMO. They're more like... 3D continuations of the Baldur's Gate concept. They do have persistent-world online play, but it's more like a PC version of a D&D campaign than a MMO, complete with a Dungeon Master and custom-designed modules and even portals between game servers.

It wasn't an mmo, (I don't however know if they made a version of it as an mmo).

Sam and Max + Monkey Island are superb games.

Civ 4 / Alpha Centurai are great as long as you are balanced with the computer, I seem to either bang my head against a brick wall or steamroll them from the start.

Dawn of War / C&C Generals(ZH) are the ones I still enjoy dabbling with after 4 or 5 years.

I really like Dungeon Siege 2, but after a while the diablo-style games (Titan Quest, Silverfall, etc) start to get boring. Sacred is probably worth trying too, i guess.

I've heard a lot of good things about The Witcher, but idk.

Also it might be worth replaying Oblivion/Morrowind with all the mods you can get on PC.

how can you recommend heroes IV but not III? seriously.

I'd add dwarf fortress and nethack, simply because any list of 'good' pc games has to include a couple of ascii games. both are freeware

You're completely correct, III would've been a much better choice. It's been ages since I've played any of them, and I couldn't remember which was one I was thinking of.

Max Payne 1+2 is available real cheap on Steam, I just about both for about $7 yesterday, I'm pretty sure the deal's only up for the weekend.

Edit: Didn't notice you already said you played 'em.

And how can you mention IWBTG but not La Mulana, you horrible horrible person?

That bunny must die game pissed me off, quit after I beat the first boss. I hate games where the controls feel all sketchy like that and not being able to pick back up your old weapons is retarded. I kept getting suckered into shittier and shittier weapons. WTF a mace on a chain, NO.
