    NHL Season 08-09

It's finally here! I haven't seen a hockey thread yet for this season so here it is.

First off a couple of links for those needing info:

    Official NHL website - http://www.nhl.com
    Good hockey coverage - http://tsn.ca/nhl/
    Good hockey forum - http://hfboards.com/
Simple list of each teams salary and cap space - http://www.hockeybuzz.com/cap-central/
Good site for all your hockey fight needs - http://www.hockeyfights.com/

So excited. Vancouver isn't going to be a major force this year but I've liked what I've seen in the preseason so far. We actually might have two lines that can score consistently.

So whose rooting for which team this year?

    Red Wings all the way

Do have a question though, I moved out of state and now I have to look into NHL Center Ice, anyone know if they blackout the games that would be on Versus?

Do you guys get the NHL network for free? If so they're going to be playing Hockey Night in Canada this year on it. It's arguably the best hockey broadcast on tv.

I was surprised to see Vancouver do well in the preseason. I barely kept up with news about them since they offered Sundin a trillion dollars.

Their chemistry seemed to be really good this year. I just hope it sticks during the season, too many unknowns to really be all that confident right now.
They play against Anaheim tonight. Interesting game, hope to see Morrison finally play with Selanne.

    I'm predicting 4-3 for Vancouver.

I think Vancouver is going to suprise a lot of people this year. There's no way their defense has as many injuries as last year, and their offense has much more balance this year.

Some other random thoughts going into the season:

Edmonton will be much improved but will doesn't have the goaltending to do any damage in the playoffs.
Calgary will slip quite a bit as losing Tanguay and Huselius for Bertuzzi and Cammeleri is not a upgrade.
Phoenix won't be as good as people think, but Chicago will.
Detroit will not repeat. Osgood is going to have to play too many games this year and they don't have a reliable backup. This of course could change if they are willing to give up some young talent.
Ottawa is in trouble if Gerber plays like he did yesterday, and if they don't get a good puck moving defensemen.
    Montreal should win the east.

That's all I got right now, so glad hockey is back.

Woo, can't wait. Flames looked decent in the pre-season (minus the complete asshanding that Vancouver gave us >_>). Hopefully the secondary scoring carries over to the season - Lombardi needs to step up and score 20+, Boyd and Moss need to each kick in another 10 each.

That and Kipprusoff needs to turn it around. His form has dipped every season, it concerns me. =\ Hopefully he plays better this season now that he's more familiar with most of the defencemen in front of him.

Goddamn I wish that Stanley Cup run hadn't happened, now everyone in the city has unrealistic expectations about how the Flames should be doing.

Did Vancouver hold onto their cap space when Sundin decided to take forever to make up his mind in hopes that he will sign with them eventually, or did they spend on some other players?

    Yep,

according to this site ( http://www.hockeybuzz.com/cap-central/ ) we have about 9 mil to play with. I hope we manage to snag Gaborik. Oh how sweet that would be.

Also, Sean Avery interview that was pretty amusing. I can't tell if this guy is a cocky douche or not. http://www.cbc.ca/thehour/videos.html?id=875507134

Anaheim vs Vancouver about to start.

I came in the hockey thread just to see where everyone who was posting lived. As expected, New England and Canada. Not really a shot at the NHL, but just reaffirming a stereotype.

It's their 100th anniversary this year, hopefully they get something done. They know they always have the fans backing em up!

I aint in no Canadia! I did however grow up ~40 minutes from Joe Louis Arena and in general awfully close to Canada (I got CBC with my awesome rabbit ears); suppose it's close enough though.

To be honest, they have a really good shot. They were miles ahead of where all the experts had them last year, and the year of experience will help Price a lot. I think he'll be much more mentally ready for the playoffs this time around. If he is, Montreal could seriously contend for the Cup.

Plus it's a contract year for Kovalev. >_>d

Interesting to see the lighter side of him. Obviously he still has a bit of an edge, but I can see why he puts on the persona he does when he's all geared up.

Not New England or Canada here... in fact, very far from one of them for half the year.

Also, a Wings fan in Colorado during the season (it's fun).
