need to stop certain programs from starting on boot

topic. i'm sure this is a noob ?, but i'm a PC noob... kind of.

skype and a few other programs automatically start up, so i have to manually shut them down each time i boot up to increase performance for Warhammer. how do i make it so they don't start up unless i ask them to?

(under assumption this is windows xp, should be same for vista)

click start -> click "run" -> type in box "msconfig" -> go to startup tab -> uncheck whatever you don't want.

Will have a popup next startup that windows has changed start up settings, just check "don't show this message again at startup"

just leave them alone, they're likely for video drivers or audio and other stuff that you want working at startup

kk, cool. i'm trying to clear my desktop competely since i'm running rocketdock now, but i can't get rid of the extra normal recycling bin and "network magic folders". this normal?

You have to delete the recycle bin from the registry.
If I understand your question correctly...

i figure since i've already got those icons on rocketdock, why have them on the desktop too... but i can't move them to the folder i put everything else from the desktop in, they just go in as shortcuts and leave the desktop icons up.
