How exactly are critical hits calculated for ranged attacks?

I will quite honest and say that beyond the fact of knowing that Ranged Critical hit's damage increase is less than Melee damage increase, I dont really know anything else on how exactly it is calculated. The wiki has this article:

However, I would greatly appreciate it if someone could explain it in a less technical manner since I am having trouble understading it.

Basically, in a nutshell, on average ranged criticals will do 25% more damage than usual

It's a much simpler concept than melee pDIF.
Whatever your non-critical damage is, multiply by 1.25; That is your critical damage.
