I wish I could post, but all my work has been analog thus far. I have some photos I took on a friend's digital... somewhere, but no idea where. I may consider posting some of the scans I made of my prints, but they don't do the actual pictures any justice.

Used to take photos a lot more than I do now. Had an aging Olympus digital that I recently replaced. Low-end kind. So I'd usually touch up my pics as best I could. This isn't one of the most captivating, but comparison:

Agreed! Did you set your camera or did you work w/ PS (or both)? I'm working on a project and would like something reminiscent of that.

I agree, those black and whites are gorgeous.

Looking at that touched-up picture now, I should have dealt with the shadows in the background some more... it's really been a long time since I've been into pictures. I take pictures for work, as it's part of the job, but they don't have to be pro.

Thanks for the compliments guys! I may have to scan some more of my photos.

And as far as how I took them...

That's my baby. Used with a Tokina ATX 28-85mm lens. Oldie, but a fantastic camera. I'm huge into manual work. I developed and printed those shots myself, but like I said they aren't the final prints.

    Nice shots Brien!

Sanoske, tell me more. I recently bought a 50mm prime f/2 MF for my Nikon D60 and I'm in love with it. I nabbed a 24mm f/2.8 MF off ebay tonight for about $100 shipped, and I'm hoping it gives me a similar experience.

What else would you like to know? Honestly, I have limited experience working in digital format, mostly because I am broke. I have been hoping to buy a DSLR for myself, but things keep popping up that require my financial attention.

Although, in my experience, the only way to get the manual feel, is by working with a manual. Obviously, the process of developing and printing your owns shots creates certain subtleties that often times don't come through on digital, at least for black and white. That's just my opinion.

For the longest time I shot with just a 50mm on my D70 and now D80. I've upped my lenses though recently buying the 17-55 f/2.8.

The 50 is such a killer lens and its dirt damn cheap too making it even better.
What do you have for length? I'd suggest the 18-200 VR. I have that as well and you can use it for damn near any situation. It's my general all purpose lens.

Agreed, you sometimes just can't get the same little things to pop in photoshop like you can with your dark room. That being said, the more time you spend inside of photoshop, the better you'll get at it and learning new techniques to produce it.

What I can say is, shoot in RAW full color and then convert it to B&W. RAW allows you to have much more flexibility with colors, curves and a whole slew of things that you just can't get with jpeg. You bought a DSLR shoot the way it was meant to be shot with in RAW.

That's my reason for the MF lenses, I'm fairly broke.

Yeah, I got my 50mm f/2 for $37 shipped. $37 fucking dollars. And it's sharper and faster than my "$200" kit lenses. The majority of people seem to lose faith in older lenses. Maybe because they don't have VR/IS or AF, or cost $800, but it saddens me. And I suppose makes me happy, because a smart shopper can pick up some of the best glass for dirt cheap.

To answer your question, I have the 18-55mm VR AF-S f/3.5-5.6G, the 55-200mm VR AF-S f/4-5.6G and the 50mm AI f/2.0, with a 24mm f/2.8 coming soon. I would like to buy a super wide <16mm and possibly a 350-500mm reflex or otherwise good star shooting lens.

The 18-200mm VR(II) peaked my interests a bit. It looks like a wonderful leave-it-on type lens that can handle anything but low light. I can buy it through Nikon for $539 new with their vendor program. But... being a DX lens, I feel like I'm limiting myself to APS-C bodies. I was looking into a D2Hs as well, since it's so cheap and powerful for action shots. I'm rambling now, but in general I try to think about each purchase as an investment, and thus I try to be flexible with my choice in lenses. $500+ for a lens that I might get 2-3 years of solid use compared to a set of primes for $250 that last for at least another 10 years, well I'm going to go with the later. The primes also have lower f stops, often better sharpness, and seem to last longer with better build quality. On the flip side, you lose VR and any auto focus, which can be nice. I need to stop rambling, but this is the stuff that's been going through my head over the last few weeks.

Looking back at my initial D60 investment, I half regret not stepping up to a D90 body, or used D80, as the D60 does not have an internal motor, meaning I can only use AF-S lenses if I want autofocus.

Well, speaking from my experience, don't goto the d80. It sucks ass not being able to use my damn CF cards anymore since the brilliance of Nikon made them SD cards. If you're wanting to upgrade and have a serious upgrade goto the D300. You can find them used now and man the differences are astounding.

It is funny though how people look at the older lens and are like that has to suck, I face it all the time when I break out the tried and true 50mm.

When you get to super wide, price is really what kills you but from renting a few different ones from penn and using friends, if you're going to do it, do it right and just buy the best thing you can get, there's a big difference between 12mm and 16mm and 18mm.

If you sell the two lenses you can buy the 1 lens and save some major room in your camera bag. I had all different kinds and sizes of lenses and now just carry the three, it's nice not being completely weighed down by having all that glass in my bag.

I have two bags right now, the Nikon bag, and the lowepro backpack. The Lowepro can take my xbox-sized 15.4" laptop, a full frame w/ lens, aps-c w/lens, two-three lenses and a flash. Which, actually I need to get as well. I was thinking about the SB-600, new price is $139.

If I did get the 18-200mm it would be so I could sell the 18-55 and 55-200. I like that idea, but I'm not sure if it's worth the $200-300 after selling my kit glass. I need to demo or rent it.

As for CF, I have one 32mb card, the rest of my stuff is SD. I sort of accidentally collect these things, but I've only spent about $40 on them so far. There's also a 2GB in the card of this camera (Canon SD750).

Another thing I grabbed, and would recommend is a coupling ring. About $6 shipped on ebay.

A shot from it. I think I calculated it to be 11:1 ratio, though I could be doing the math wrong.
