Guiness Book of World Records 2009 Gamers Edition

Super Mario Kart has the longest legacy and the biggest impact on video games in history, according to Guinness World Records which compiled a list of the top 50 consoles games of all time.

Tasked with selecting the best console games of all time, contributors of this year's Gamer's Edition reviewed hundreds of releases to compile a list of the top 50 titles ranked on their initial impact and lasting legacy.

Tetris ranks in at number two, according to the list, and the original Grand Theft Auto is in the number three spot. Where does Super Mario Bros. turn up? Way down at number 17, beneath Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Guinness World Records Editor-in-Chief, Craig Glenday, said of the selection process: "We knew this would be a complex task so we invited a crack team of industry experts to form a judging panel - and the result is a "top 50" list of games ranked both on their importance and on how fun they are to play."

I would love to know who was on their team, because their picks are just friggin insane.

The team said they picked Super Mario Kart for the top spot because it is the best-selling racer on the SNES, the GameCube and the DS. Tetris, a good choice for number two, was selected because it is available on at least 50 different gaming platforms. And Grand Theft Auto holds the record for the most controversial series of games.

The full list, shown here, appear in the newly-released Guinness World Records 2009 Gamer's Edition.

Look over that list and then tell us what your top ten picks would have been. Keep in mind this is being judged on a game's initial impact and lasting legacy, not necessarily how fun they were.

Metal Gear Solid NOT in the top 10? All their other opinions lose creditability in my eyes because of this.

Halo? HALO? fucking halo is not THAT awesome to be as high as it is.
Good fps with a decent/great story and fun easter eggs yeah but it needs more weapon balance. Halo only deserves to be on the list because of the red vs blue webseries.

There are a couple games that I think don't deserve their place, but I'll have to admit, it's a pretty spot on list. Gaming bias aside of course.

Well, better than the IGN cartoon top 100.

If they're talking strictly about 'legacy' here's a lot of redundancy in that list...why would you have both Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night up there, and every super mario game since the fucking SNES came out is up there. Putting sequels above predecessors seems a habit of whoever pulled that shit together.

And you can tell whoever compiled that list is completely fucking ignorant of PC gaming, and thinks 'gaming' probably didn't exist before 1996. Yeah, Bioshock...like there was never a game called System Shock.

No, they didn't :D Sonic 3 is basically Sonic 2 with a different bonus stage.

Some things are placed okay, a lot of choices are just bad...

And Shadow of the Colossus isn't on the list, therefore the list fails. Sure, Ico's there, but SotC wru?

I'd probably put Thief on the list instead of Oblivion, replace Mario 64 with Mario Kart, (WTF?) and add Age of Empires or Starcraft somewhere on that list. Also Tekken > Soul Calibur.

    Wii Sports over Guitar Hero?

How many successful spin-offs and copy cats has Guitar Hero had? As far as an impact on a gaming industry, GH is top 15 material imo. Guitar Hero rejuvenated a dead genre of gaming, Wii Sports is just some fucking mini-games.

This is what perplexes me: How far back should you go based on what game had the most impact? FF6 was pretty much FF7 for SNES, but FF1 started it all. Think about it, shouldn't PONG be #1 since it was the first game ever created?

Outrun is that classic driving game by Sega. You simply drive and drive and drive until you time out or reach the goal. It is actually quite a big impact as there wasn't much other similar game at the time, and the tune is a very well known classic.

The game has several levels, each level forks, giving huge replay value. When you finish the game or you get game over, a map shows you how far you've gone.

The levels branch out a lot, each with varying difficulty. Generally if you choose the same fork each time you either branch to the hard fork or the easy fork, but you can rotate left/right at each fork and end up at medium. Each level goes through a theme and the first stage of Outrun is generally a beach.

As you get further in the roads become more difficult to navigate and more obstacles on the road (traffic).

Also, Doom should have taken Halo's spot, if we are talking "legacy" or "impact" on gaming industry.
