You can't play gold/silver as is. You'll need to replace its battery. Assuming this is real in the first place.

The Red/Blue remakes were basically the same game with all of the stuff introduced in later gens (i.e. introduction of steel/dark, making psychic less uber-alles, natures, abilities, new moves, new pokemon), a new gadget that provided background info about the gym leaders and other famous NPCs, and a new explorable area called the Sevii Isles.

Hopefully, the extra space on a DS cart means they'll be able to expand Johto and Kanto. Johto, in case you've forgotten, was incredibly tiny and 90% of the buildings couldn't be entered. And Kanto was borderline abandoned, with almost everything being closed, massively reduced in size, or hit with some natural disaster or another.
