    Subwoofer distance from PC tower

Finished building a PC, and now need to set up my sound. Going to use my surround sound from my home theater since I don't watch anything on TV anymore. My main issue will be the three subwoofers I have. I have one powered subwoofer w/magnetic shielding (8"@110w), and two old 12" Alpine Type-E subwoofers I used to have in my car. Boxes are wood, 3/4" thick, no magnetic shielding. Using my old amp from my car to power the two 12" (PRS-X720, power tested @ 997x1 @4ohm) with a power inverter to run off the 110v outlets.

My question is how far away from the tower do I need to place these subs? Should I get some magnetic shielding for the 12"s? Any help would be appreciated.

who needs 3 12" subs for their pc O.o

I've hooked up a car sub to my home stereo when I was in college and was first learning how to spin records. It was such a pain in the ass. I really recommend not doing it. If you have to, keep the speakers 3-4 feet away from your computer tower if they are not magnetically shielded. 3-4 feet and your fine. If you have an aluminum case to your pc, you can have it right up against. The aluminum casing will protect your pc (and is often all magnetic shielding is anyway)

This was my original thought at first, but since I have the necessary components already to make in function, why not use it lol.

though those definitely would pack more punch then my speakers, I've had my tower sitting on top of my z5500 (logitech) sub for about 6 months now with no obvious damage to the hard drives.

I only run the sub at about half way though.

You really should be fine no matter how close you put them together. Both the harddrive and subs should be shielded. The harddrive for sure at least, and I believe most modern subs come magnetically shielded as standard.

I have had my subwoofer literally 3 inches away from my hard drive for the last 6 months with no issues.

he said car subwoofer which are typically never shielded. For home subwoofers you can build your pc like right in those things (not really). With a home sub you only have to worry about it rattling things loose in your case ^_^

you should be careful of vibrational damage to your hdds, vibration is a killer for hdd

I think the vibration goes more out and down to the floor then directly up, just judging by feeling. My case has some good rubber stand off feet and hdd anti-vibration mounts and I don't run the sub at full blast so I think it's okay.
