Having a group of friends to lend / borrow cards with is excellent. Currently I don't need to worry about zendikar fetches because they drafted like daily back then and kept them all.
Right now I have dredge and TES so I have a lot of combo centric cards, but I want to diversify out in case everyone decides to hate on combo.

RDW is probably your cheapest option. Otherwise I would recommend sticking to standard while playing the trading game to build card stock in modern. Or do what I did and travel back to 1999-2000 and buy dual lands for a buck each.

Never did try this and didn't catch onto why it got popular. I guess I am missing something.

My best friend is the same way. Growing up we played what is now vintage, so we had power, duals etc and we both sold out in college. He didn't want to get back in cos he knew he'd want to rebuild that type of deck which is $$$$$ nowadays.

As long as you play casually, it's a lot of fun. I mainly draft, but I also have 3 decks: 1 modern, 1 legacy and 1 EDH. The guys at my store are always trying to get me to go to GPs and SCG Opens, but I'm happy just being an FNM warrior.

A lot of people also pool collections. I'm really apprehensive about lending/borrowing cards though. Theft is an issue in the community. It's not that I don't trust the people that I play with, but if they were to borrow say fetches or goyfs from me and it ends up getting stolen at an event, I'd rather not deal with trying to get replacements back from them.

Ya, just have to be super careful at all times. Not even a second. I play with my foot in my backpack strap and between my legs. I cringe when I see people sling it over a chair back. So many people walking up and down the aisle, sometimes squeezing through because of spectators, it could up and leave so easy.

Is Sligh remotely viable in Standard right now?

If by that you mean Sligh as in RDW then...yes if you're very very experienced in meta as the current decklist plays much like Legacy Burn which is quite unforgiving of play errors. If you mean as Sligh the archetype then...very much yes since it isn't limited to mono red. Or red at all.

Last month or so RDW has placed top 16 in several events so it still has some muscle.
    Good example of RW Burn:
    Spoiler: show
    Creatures (8)
    4 Ash Zealot
    4 Chandra’s Phoenix

    Enchantments (3)
    3 Chained to the Rocks

    Instants (26)
    4 Boros Charm
    4 Lightning Strike
    4 Magma Jet
    3 Searing Blood
    3 Shock
    4 Skullcrack
    4 Warleader’s Helix

    Lands (23)
    2 Boros Guildgate
    10 Mountain
    3 Mutavault
    4 Sacred Foundry
    4 Temple of Triumph

    Sideboard (15)
    1 Chained to the Rocks
    2 Fated Conflagration
    4 Firedrinker Satyr
    4 Satyr Firedancer
    1 Spark Trooper
    3 Viashino Firstblade

Example of a top 8'd Mono Red Devotion:
    Spoiler: show
Mono Red Devotion by Kevin Heath 5th – 8th Place TCG Chicago 5k

    Creatures (28)
    4 Ash Zealot
    4 Frostburn Weird
    4 Burning-Tree Emissary
    4 Boros Reckoner
    4 Chandra’s Phoenix
    4 Fanatic of Mogis
    1 Scourge of Valkas
    3 Stormbreath Dragon

    Planeswalkers (3)
    3 Chandra, Pyromaster

    Instants (8)
    2 Lightning Strike
    4 Magma Jet
    2 Searing Blood

    Land (21)
    16 Mountain
    1 Mutavault
    4 Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx

    Sideboard
    2 Anger of the Gods
    2 Burning Earth
    3 Mizzium Mortars
    2 Pithing Needle
    2 Ratchet Bomb
    4 Skullcrack

So, they'll probably cost like 30 bucks or more in your Local card stores.

Not sure if being facetious or not - it's an online only set.

Carpooling to GP Atlanta tomorrow morning - hoping I get a sweet sealed pool so that I can embarrass myself with poor draft skills on Sunday

Nice. Good luck at the GP. I'm trying to decide if I want to go to the SCG Open/Invitational or be lazy and just go to Game Day at my LGS.

Online only thing, but I would easily pay $30 per pack for a chance of foil Ancestral Recall o.O

Went 2-3 drop with a really awkward pool at the GP. Buddy started 6-1 with a real strong pool but the draws quit on him and went 6-3 missing day 2
We won a few standard win a boxes in side events, I got my Deathrite Shamans signed by the artist. Same artist did Liliana of the Veil and a different buddy got them altered with 4 different Leia outfits
    Great trip all in all

I am looking into getting back into magic, I usually played green, burn or some sort of assholeish black deck, is any of that viable in the current block? I have been reading some of the new cards from nyx and they all seem lame as fuck.

Burn and Mono Black Devotion are both very viable in standard. Also Burn is rather cheap I believe that you can get all the cards for about $50 minus side board 2x Chandra, Pyromasters.

Gary is a pretty big asshole.

    Spoiler: show
    Gray Merchant of Asphodel

I kinda want to splice black into my Venser bounce/blink deck, but alas, Gary works with Devotion, so it wouldn't work that well unless I spliced a LOT.
