COPD is a bitch. Happy anything and everything going towards cutting down/(STOPPING) smoking in any form is going on. Think of this as a small doctor's order on the country, and you're all virtuous enough to follow his advice.

if obama didn't smoke regular cigarettes I'd have more respect for his banhammer. (of course yes all smoking is terrible...etc.)
They are basically just using "think of the children" as the whole basis for this - but kids I knew who smoked in high school didn't get hooked on banana-flavored tobacco or some stupid shit like that, they smoked the same Marlboros that their parents did.
I'm not super "in touch" with the smoker populace, but for children who start smoking, do they really start with the type of stuff that is being banned here? I think the children angle is just a big smokescreen with no basis in fact. But to what end? To knick off the tiny % of smokers who exclusively smoke flavored shit? I don't get it.
I, again, will agree that the targetting of cloves/flavored doesn't make sense. it's a niche or special occasion kind of thing for smokers in general. I guess the argument is that a sweeter tasting smoke would be easier to get a kid started on, but really I think you're right in that most smokers start and stop with marlboros/et al. kinda like how kids don't like the taste of beer but "girly" drinks are like candy... but again, most drinkers drink the common stuff to the point of abuse, not the peppermint schnopps or smirnoff ice.
I cant believe you guys can't see who the real winner is here. Phillip Morris lobbyied for this bill because it essentially monopolizes the tabacco market. They were getting their asses kicked and this essentailly bans the reason the reason the competition competition was doing so well.
This is why I want campaign finance reform to ban lobbyist of every kind and ban donations from big companies and from people that work for them and their subsidiaries. But that will never happen considering when it comes to money every politician will welcome it along with the strings attached.
Thanks Rhinox. You know, from now on whenever something passes Congress or the executive does something, i'm always going to ask which companies lobbied for it. Because it really does seem like that's the only thing the government really responds to anymore.
Our capitalist society is fueled and controlled by money? WHEN THE FUCK DID THIS HAPPEN!?
I've been smoking for 10+ years now. I welcome all and any regulations, banning, price hiking. Fuck it just ban them all together. Cancer is a horrible horrible thing. Cigarettes are a horrible, horrible thing to be selling. Nothing that addictive and unhealthy should sold over the counter, so I think this is a good start personally.
well hey, I did question the clove thing.
I suppose the optimist in me sees the FDA hopefully taking some of the really awful things out of tobacco, but what does PM gain from coming under FDA regulation, or is there more to this bill than meets the eye? I'm not doubting what you're saying; I just want to know more.
We're systematically attempting to eliminate everything harmful around us. Natural selection will find a way around it though, it always does.
I hate it when people smoke anywhere near me so getting one step closer to outright banning is A-Ok with me.
I hate people who bitch incessantly about other people smoking in non designated areas.
In the airports, inside the terminals there's a place where people are allowed to have a smoke. they remind me of cattle.
i'm not a smoker and hoped people who do smoke stop. <insert it's my life blah blah> yeah it is but if this universal health-care passes, why the fuck should i pay for your cancer?
Sorry but I have no respect for smokers/smoking. Even when walking to work there will be people smoking outside and that pisses me off. Go find other ways to kill yourself that don't involve me. Thanks.
Yeah I hate people that drive cars and pollute the air.
You're going to get cancer and die because you stood near someone smoking a cigarette. And if it's not that, it'll definitely be one of the million other things that cause cancer that you're exposed to on a daily basis. Or you might even die in a nuclear holocaust.
