    Mad Men

I'm sure I'm not the only person on these forums that watches/loves this show, with season 3 starting next month, season 2 just out on dvd, and it leading dramas for emmy noms thought it was an apt time to start a thread..

So who else wants to be Don Draper and/or fuck/see Joan Halloway topless?

Love Mad Men. I'm glad my friends told me to start watching this show.

I love how it unapologetically de-romanticizes all the structural norms we came to believe about the 50s and 60s.

Can't wait for the next season.

A great reminder how everyone in Mad Men has some sort of facade. It might be one of the best episodes yet.

Christina Hendricks is the perfect woman.

There is no debating this, it is a fact which I can prove with SCIENCE.

Something amusing about last week's episode that I glossed over the first time; don't know if it's really spoiler-worthy, but just in case:

    Spoiler: show
Sterling's daughter's wedding, per the date on the invitation, is one day after the Kennedy assassination.

It's obviously intentional, I would bet the season will end with it, they have a habit of doing that w/ Cuban Missile Crisis and other stuff I can't remember atm.

I just started watching this show and I have to say it's amazing. I finished ep. 1-6 of the first season already this weekend. It's fascinating to watch the lives of people in the 60's. I know it's all written in the here & now but the acting/writing is so top notch, it's like I'm looking into the past. Easily one of my favorite shows now.

Semi-bump. Mad Men won emmys for Best Writing & Best Drama, rightfully so. I have finally caught up on every episode and have to say it's damned great. The latest episode offered an absolute shock involving a John Deere tractor/lawn mower. Here's a synopsis of the characters in the latest episode but the best part is the animated gif of said John Deere incident.

So what's the appeal of this show? I've only seen the first episode and it didn't interest me at all....

Why do u watch it? I plan to give it another go, but I just don't feel it after that episode....

I'm not going to explain the show to you if you're too lazy to look it up.

Yea, even she wasn't enough to keep me interested.

I'm not lazy to look it up. I just don't want to spoil it if I actually watch it. I've read stuff in the news and I've watched the first episode. I just know it's about an ad agency in the 60s.

But watching it just seemed quite boring.... Especially for a Series Premier I'd expect it to really pull u in, but I didn't feel it with this one.

did you watch episode 1 of season 3? I wouldn't be interested in the show either if I just jumped in midway because it is quite dull unless you understand the characters/whats going on. If however you start from episode 1 season you will be riveted for each 48min period. Basically you should be interested because Mad Men shatters the sort of illusory view of the early 1960s that people have built up by offending our PC/enlightened values (i.e. pregnant women smoking, flagrant sexual harassment, no black people that aren't in elevator operators, maids etc, little kids playing with dry cleaning bags, anti-semitism etc.)

I mean like grantlogan said explaining the show is kind of a waste because the show loses its oomph without the beautiful visuals/visual symbolism 90% of the shots have. Also, because the plot is very slow moving with storylines taking multiple seasons to develop sometimes explaining the show would give it away. But each of the main characters represents a social archetype of the period, from the unfulfilled housewife, career gals, closeted homos, and well its kind of hard to peg in the main character because he at the same time is the stereotypical 1960s redblooded american male but he isn't in a lot of ways too and if not for Breaking Bad simply having a better leading actor Mad Men would have that award locked down.

Ultimately this show isnt for everyone but it is something you need to start at the beginning to truly appreciate.

Kind of pissed Lost didn't win best writing, I mean yeah Mad Men is good but the buildup of/reveal of 5 seasons worth of Lost in 1 episode just narrowly beats out the tweeest in the episode that won.

Edit: Very disappointed they never win the female acting awards cause outside of Don Draper, the show is centered around 3 women who all play their roles so amazingly and got nothing to show for it

It might be the best/worst scene in the series so far.

Like, seriously. Who the hell comes up with that? "I think the new guy should get his foot run over by a riding lawn mower."

Brit guy's whole "Oh bother" reaction is absolutely priceless in that image.

I think the best part is that the title of the episode is Man Walks into an Ad Agency, like this whole thing is a joke. And I mean Matt Weiner comes up with it like he does with all his other deranged shit, it serves as a macguffin to emphasize how any sign of weakness was it (Fred being incontinent last season, not having a foot, etc) for you, that the British office is effectively destroying Sterling Cooper, all dragging out the inevitable confrontation between the Brits/SC until next season by using this to keep the old Brit guy around..

Oh Peggy. You fucked a Duck. Literally.

Also, Cooper is a very interesting individual. I wonder if his eccentricity is genuine, since he seems to be the only major character on the show without some sort of facade going on.

I really loved when Don put Peggy in her place. I think Cooper's eccentricity is a bit of a facade. I am assuming that when Sterling Cooper was starting out he was the creative side of it to Roger's accounts and his eccentric nature was part of what sold clients in the same way as Don's staring off into the middle distance as he philosophizes does now. I'm sure he has some sort of facade going on (like everybody else on the show does!), and now that he is a credited character instead of just a guest star I expect it will be touched upon somewhat. Especially with the direction I think they are building to this season/Roger getting pushed aside by everyone.

About half way through S02 now and it has really gripped me. I usually just watch sci-fi but this has reeled me in something fierce.
