Took the words right outa my mouth.

I don't think that it should be illegal. A fighter can be injured just as seriously with a knee bar. Defend against that shit if you don't want to be hit with it.

Exactly...just like foot stomps. One of my last opponents bitched about foot stomps because I broke a few bones in his foot with them. My response was, don't get hit with foot stomps.

I thought the favorable rules to grapplers is what keeps some Martial Arts guys from competing. Small Joint Manipulation is the easiest way to get out of chokes, but that is a No-No in MMA. They should bring back fishhooking and head butts, and let people use Small Joint manipulation, and see if people still get choked out.

legal headbutting would be awesome, if only because I know you'd have a few guys delivering them catastrophically and KOing themselves.

Former NFLer Herschel Walker signed with Strikeforce

    By Maggie Hendricks

Herschel Walker, the Heisman Trophy-winning running back and former NFL player with the Minnesota Vikings and Dallas Cowboys, has found a new career: mixed martial arts. The 47-year-old Walker has signed a contract with Strikeforce to fight at an unspecified date. He will begin training with American Kickboxing Academy, the high-profile camp in San Jose, Calif., that trains UFC standouts Josh Koscheck, Mike Swick, Jon Fitch, Cain Velasquez and Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh Thomson.

"I've been training for several years. I would play college football games on Saturday and then compete in martial arts tournaments on Sunday after church. I'm now looking forward to opening up another chapter in my life and to competing in MMA," said Walker in a news release.

Walker is not the first high-profile athlete to make the jump to MMA. In the current season of "The Ultimate Fighter," four former NFL players are trying for a chance at a contract with the UFC, most notably Marcus Jones, who played with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for seven years. Cleveland Cavaliers star Shaquille O'Neal has trained in mixed martial arts for years, and made jokes about challenging former UFC champ Chuck Liddell.

That doesn't mean that the road to MMA success will be easy for Walker, who retired from football in 1997. During last week's episode of "The Ultimate Fighter," Jones became sick from the intense workouts that MMA requires. Afterwards, he noted that he never had to work that hard in the NFL.

Walker will also have the obstacle of age in front of him. Though there are fighters who compete well into their forties -- most notably Randy Couture, who is 46 -- but those fighters did not spend much of their lives being tackled by 265 pound linebackers. The wear and tear on a running back should not be dismissed when looking at Walker's chances.

At the same time, it will be hard not to root for him. He's been an MMA fan for years, and was even at UFC 103 this past weekend in Dallas. Walker is a modern-day Jim Thorpe, having competed in the Olympic bobsled, professional football and now MMA. Now, he will test the bounds of his age and health again in MMA. Seeing a 47-year-old man walk the walk in this manner is downright inspirational.

Throwing in the towel isn't "illegal" it just ends the fight. They just worded it weird.

Small joint manipulation is "meh" for getting out of chokes honestly. There are much better ways to get out of bad spots then grabbing thumbs or fingers. Headbutting was legal for a long time and the only people that really benefited were wrestlers. Mark Kerr was the fucking king of headbutts. I took several martial arts before I started into MMA and can honestly say I don't use much of anything I learned from Mu Duk Kwan, Tae Kwon Do, Wing Chun, or plain ass Karate. I use the obvious blend of Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Western Boxing, Muay Thai, and Wrestling. Everything else has proven itself either extremely situational or useless. I still use a choke I learned in Mu Duk Kwan...my leg kicks were easier to get perfected because of Wing Chun...Tae Kwon Do was a waste of a year...lol

Whether it's useful or not, I don't understand why small joint manipulation is disallowed. It's not a life or health threatening risk, its ban is lame.

People would be getting their fingers ripped off every fight. Same goes for the Grabbing the clavicle.

Someone getting an epic Kancho would be hilarious though.

There are already fans who get bored by a very technical ground game, so they stand people up in a (supposed) stalemate quite a bit. Now imagine if the two guys weren't even positioning during those two minute long stretches of technical ground game... you'd have a camera zoomed in on a really complex game of mercy, and probably like five people interested. Ditto for why some other things are illegal, too. Guy 1 goes for a double leg - guy 2 elbows him at the base of the skull with zero protection - five minutes of perfectly good action truncated into a much less exciting KO victory.

    ...

Elbowing a guy at the base of the skull is illegal because it can cause paralysis and death, not because it "ends perfectly good action".

I really wish that knees to a grounded opponent were legal in the US. Keep people from blindly shooting in for singles out of desperation. It really isn't any more dangerous than anything else that is going on...it just "looks" worse.
