For the first time and right in E3 Expo 2009, a preview of Final Fantasy XIII English demo on the Xbox 360 has been previewed featuring one main feature – Summoning. Towards the end of the video, you will get to see Lightning perform a Odin summon. Pretty kick ass.

I think people here were talking about a playable demo that more than just the SE devs could use... it was more a live devonstration not a playable demo since there wouldn't be an begining or ending point in the demonstration, just whatever the devs felt like doing. Just like the FFXIV thing might end up being... nothing more than a live demonstration and not a wide playable demo for people who attend the event.

I don't expect them to have a version that people can walk up and play at all. That would be strange for an MMO. There's no way you could get a feel for the game in a 5 minute demo.

I'm expecting them to be showing videos of the battle system and stuff like that.

$20 says the beta will be 100% Japanese anyways because devs are too lazy to get stuff translated.

You do realize that a fully playable demo of FFXIII came with the Japanese version of FFVII:AC Complete? Rumor has it that the English recordings have been done awhile ago but thanks to the non-exclusivity in NA markets PS3 users here got the shaft though, freaking Microsoft.

I expect to see an actual gameplay demo or, at least, screen shots accompanied by an explanation / narrative of certain in-game features and how it will be diff from other mmo's. Game should be hitting Beta (least in JP) soon, so you gotta expect more info to be released

Beta will not be exclusively Japanese, the release is going to be simultaneous any work being done is being done for all regions. They don't make a game and then retcon and translate everything, they create a game wherein it is available in multiple languages to begin with.

The open beta will be without a doubt cross-region so they can work out bugs, especially with translation, but I have a feeling a closed beta early on might be Japanese only just so they can get feedback to the development team quicker without having to go through the translation process. It would make the progress faster overall. They could also maybe make a couple of region specific servers too I suppose in the closed beta process and than open up cross-region for the open beta. Basically a cluster of multiple languages in the middle of the beta process does not explicitly help SE when early on the beta they are trying to test game concepts and game breaking bugs. But I guess in due time we will find out if its different. Hell if they wanted to do Cross-Region Closed Beta and forget Japanese only, this Con would be the ideal place to mention it since its in Germany, saying it there would have a lot more meaning than saying it in Japan or America.

As far as I remember FFXI didn't have an open beta, and I wouldn't expect XIV to have it too.

The press got a playable version of the new Star Wars MMO at E3, behind closed doors though.
