I've been doing that as well when the mob is far enough from me. Only problem I've encountered from time to time is having 2 mobs together, one with ranged. Even with stoneskin up, I'll root him, but he'll blast my ass before I can get out of range. Just need to be faster with getting dots on the other and running away?

You should turn on the Display distance option. Root ranged mob at 25m and then step back like 1-2 meters, switch target, tag him with erosion.

Couple questions for other SM since the guilds 48 wasn't sure.

Spirit Wall of Protection I - Anyone use this? Had some pick up healer the other day who said a guy in his guild used it and it was pretty nice. I never really read it before and thought it was a spirit only buff, just from the name. Two minute cool down for a buff, from most spirits, that's 30 seconds. The only one that looks really nice is the 1 minute Fire Spirit buff that increases %attack and adds a small reflect to your party members.

Magic Implosion I - Does this share the same cool down as the pre-req Ignite Aether? I'm -guessing- it does. While the damage is nice and the extra dot is as well, it's a waste of a slot for something that does the same thing, just slightly more.

Been tinkering with the Stigma planner trying to decide what I want. I need to upgrade most of the ones I have. Waiting til 42 so I can get the next up Ignite Aether. Plus.. I don't have the Stigma shards to slot anything at the moment. Whenever I go to farm, I get ganked by someone 5+ levels higher that I can't land a spell on, or a group of people.

I don't think magic implosion is on the same CD as ignite, i could be wrong though. Guess I'll equip it and test it in a few mins lol.

Edit: Just tested, Ignite Aether is on a seperate CD than Magic Implosion. Let the buff removal commence ^_^

So like, I just got my SM to level 11 and i'm having tons of fun already. So, how do you guys fare in pvp? I know flight is a limited factor atm but once pets can fly how would you rank their strengths and weaknesses, because it's clear to me that SM is a helluvalot different than other pet classes I played in other games (coughffxicough)

Honestly, your whole mentality changes once you're in the air. You really won't notice the lack of pet once you have all your cc abilities.

Gonna bother the SMs some more. Bewks or Orbs? Right now when I'm fighting I tend to open with Earth Chain (I think that's what it's called) after dispatching my pet and layer DoTs while kiting mob away while my pet beats down on them, throwing a flame bolt in every once in a while. Is this the gist of it or is there a more efficient way?

Whatever is currently the most updated weapon you have.

I don't think I purposefully auto attacked any mob I was trying to kill 10-50, so the auto attack is moot.

Just use whatever has more Magic boost on it at the time. If you get into PvP alot, the orbs tend to have HP on them more than Books, just an observation.

As a Spiritmaster I can probably count on one hand how many times I was resisted on a mob for a spell. If you're getting alot of resists, the mob is too high for you or the person you're fighting is going to kick your ass, and the difference between book and orb accuracy wouldn't save you anyway.

28? Back to smashing more skeletons and the occasional asmo that decides to fuck with my earth spirit.

you make it sound like sm is a mini sorc with a pet, i've only leveled the one on my friend's acct to 15 but i have noticed that i'm usually spamming the early ice + fire chains to speed things up and to kill something before my pet dies. i guess i'm still making assumptions from ffxi which i shouldn't be doing but is it better to just use spirit to tank mobs around your level and kill them or to just dot kite elites around? also how is sm in terms of damage on raid bosses and such compared to sorc and ranger? seems like a good job with an ability to stay out of aoes and i'm hoping its more used than smn was in xi

Some mobs, I use earth spirit to tank and just lay DoTs and nuke. For elites, wind or water spirits and kiting.

Magic Attack adds to the attack of your weapons (Books or Orbs), which is more or less useless. Magic Boost adds to your spell damage.

It lets me put my pet on the mob as soon as we start combat, fully buffed with DP Armor and Stigma Armor, instead of waiting till 65-75% to do so. It's really hard to stop an elite from kicking your pet's face in when it's shooting it for 3k while your dots are ticking on it. It lets you kill those types of mobs faster because your pet can start attacking sooner without worry about getting insta gibbed.

After hitting 38 and starting to solo elites, I now appreciate this post more then ever. Thanks Silver.

This might belong in the Random Question thread but meh, SM thread needs moar posts anyways :D

    1. Do mobs Deaggro while they have DoTs on them? I ran into some problems sometimes while kiting mobs on rng so I was just wondering.

    2. In general, the higher the level on the elemental servants the more damage they cause? Or is there certain instances you would use fire elemental over wind for ex.

Not really an SM, but as a sorc, yes, mobs do lose aggro with DoTs on. There's a few places where you can throw a DoT on a mob that can't reach you; it'll sit there and keep taking damage and returning to full without ever getting upset. With a couple of people, you can actually kill a mob this way, but you don't get XP or drops. In fact, the corpse auto-disintegrates. This is pretty telling in-so-far as "claim" level hate mechanics go.
