It was just too much. I remember my obsessions and nerdiness but I guess it's just annoying because it's like a contest to see how many references he can squeeze into a book. He's a decent writer but that feels like a crutch.

The book itself is kinda boring.

I noticed it in that as well but as it was his first major release I gave him the benefit of the doubt on the second one. Looks like that's his go-to style.

I just finished the Spin trilogy from Robert Charles Wilson.
It's an interesting read, but may not be for everyone.
If you can't take it but want something with similar ideas, you might try Charles Stross' Acellerando, Glasshouse, Singularity Sky, and Iron Sunrise.

Finished Golden Son (2nd book of Red Rising trilogy), and god damn that ending.

Big kudos to the guys here recommending/discussing the book though, absolutely awesome series so far. Going to kill me waiting out for the 3rd.

I could have bought an 11 pull and have 1000 gems left over, but all I got was this silly title.

Ditto. Read both Red Rising and Golden Son over a week. Now that's how you cliffhanger.

In queue: The Martian and a reread of Alloy of Law since Shadows of Self is coming in October. The first 2 preview chapters are on Tor.com somewhere. God I'm hyped to return to the mistborn universe.

Glad to recruit another fan! Now, just to suffer through waiting for the third book...

Last month's reads include The Martian, Ready Player One, and a couple re-reads Elantris, and The Death and Life of Great American Cities

Loved The Martian and enjoyed Ready Player One once I could get past the cringe love story within it. That last book is non fiction so it probably doesn't belong in this thread =P

That was probably one of the best recommendations I've had for books in a long time. I'm glad to see others have picked it up as well. Shit is phenomenal.

I've mentioned it but I couldn't stand this book. After reading the original trilogy it just felt really really stupid.

I'm rereading Harry Potter again. I fucking love Harry Potter.

I read it fairly recently myself and that's a series I will never get tired of for as long as I live.

ty for red rising reccommend, burned through a third of the first book in one shift at work so far

Suppose I really should actually read Harry Potter at some point.

About to finally dive into GoT though, after a short break from the multi-book reads... so maybe after that.

GoT is a much slower read in my experience. Then again, I read all 7 HP books in a 7 day period between the Spring and Summer term because that was all the time I had for them.

Something about good YA books that I just eat them up. I'm not exactly in the "young" part of being an adult anymore, but I don't care. They're good books.

Don't let the book sizes on HP fool you. It's like 14 point font and double spaced. Great reading, but not nearly as copious when compared to ASOIAF.

IIRC I read Goblet of Fire in less than 10 hours with breaks. And it remains the only Potter book I have read since I'm too lazy to buy.

And I understand the hate for Alloy of Law. It's pretty much a spaghetti western that doesn't develop the Mistborn world. Only reason Wayne & Wax era are getting 4 books is probably due to the publisher going "this is good for the YA crowd." I pretty much equate it to Dresden Files in how it reads like a comic book and being overall a lighter read.

It's also the complexity of the text. The authors have different word choices because they're writing for different audiences.
Even if you regularize the layout so both books are equal on the page, over the same number of pages, Potter is going to be the faster read than Thrones.

Exactly. Especially the first two Potter books. They are afternoon reads at most.
