    USB Port on HDTV?

I bought an NX-32031 HDTV on black friday for $265, no complaints about it. I noticed it has a USB port on it while setting it up, there is no mention of one in the manual or any of the diagrams, and it already has an RS-232 service port on it so it likely isn't for firmware upgrades or service professionals. I'm trying to find some documentation on what it is for.

Diagnostics when a tech works on it and firmware upgrades.

The location on the device implies that it is intended to be used by the customer. It is in the quick-access panel next to the headphone jack and a few video inputs.

It may be different for every TV. But we use the USB port on my friend's TV to plug in my external hard drive full of movies. I'm not sure what model his is, but its a 46" Samsung I think. It has a very simple menu system that's a pain in the ass to navigate, but it gets the job done.

I know what the possibilities are, I'm just looking for a way to nail down specifically what it is and how to use it. I've already shoved a thumb drive in it and that yielded nothing.

On my TV, personally, it's for firmware upgrades (and yes, it's meant to be used by the customer, they offer the upgrade files for you to download from the website so you can flash it yourself), plus it will display movies/pictures if you happen to plug in a flash drive with pics or movies on it.

Possibilities aside, that's what it actually does on mine. And I've upgraded the firmware once before. It actually fixed something.

As for you putting your drive in it, did you go through the menu system to find where you might be able to access it? On mine, you plug it in, but you still have to go to some special place in the menu that tells it to look at the drive.

Mine (Bravia 40S5100) needs a firmware patch to disable the auto-dimming feature, which Sony will send to you on a USB key for free if you ask. Pretty cool if you ask me, sure beats NOT being able to fix firmware problems without bringing it in for repair and swapping circuit boards.

Mine's a Samsung, not a Sony, but I just downloaded the patch off the website and put it on my own USB key.

I should have checked to see if they'd send me a free one!

Yes, but then you'd have to own a sony TV...

Probably is a user USB port.

You probably need to have the flash drive formatted in FAT32, not NTSC, which only Windows shit can read.

Yeah I actually thought about that possibly being the issue, but then a little voice went "Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah" thinking that a brand spanking new hdtv couldn't possibly only be able to read fat32. I'm going to try that now.

Edit: No dice there either. Gah, sure would be nice to find a service manual for it or something that would explain what I can do with it.
