Bringing Shatner into the new Star Trek franchise seems a little more "trek nerd demand" than "this will be fun/cool" Wasnt that one reason "Generations" was made? Getting two great captains on the screen at the same time? Not that I am against it persay, just hope its done with proper planning so its awesome rather than "meh"

No. Shatner's had his next-gen time and is dead, dead, dead. No more.

I don't think any true trek fan would let a little thing like Kirk dying in Generations stop them from being open to having him show up in this new series. If engineers can reroute plasma through the emergency conduits a hundred different ways, then they can bring alternate-timeline-and-therefore-not-necessarily-dead old Kirk into this franchise.

That being said, I remember when this one was getting made that Shatner said the only way he would appear in another ST movie was if he had a major role, that he would not play a cameo, so to speak.

    Edit:

He suggested the film canonize his novels where Kirk is resurrected,[63] but Abrams decided if his character was accompanying Nimoy's, it would have become a film about the resurrection of Kirk, and not about introducing the new versions of the characters.[60] Nimoy disliked the character's death in Generations, but felt resurrecting Kirk would also be detrimental to this film.

they have even more lost people working on it, any time travel will be handled well and there will be great character development... what more could you want?

As any Trekkie knows, a general rule of thumb was the even # movies were awesome, and since the 1st movie of this new franchise was awesome, the sequal has a high chance of being disgustingly awesome.

Roberto Orci took a moment after the Cowboys & Aliens panel at WonderCon to talk to press about Star Trek 2. Orci has been writing the scrip with Alex Kurtzman and stated that he believes production will begin this fall. He noted that some of the fanbase was not happy with the first film and notes that they listened to specific fan reactions when writing the sequels narrative. He elaborated by saying:

"Everyone said [Kirk] is too young to become Captain. So maybe in the next movie, somebody goes, 'Man, you sure became Captain young and fast.' You start to incorporate people's opinions... If it's organic to the story and you find someone who doesn't think too highly of Kirk because he maybe skipped a few steps, that's maybe a fun thing to consider. That comes from a fan reaction and maybe gives you a story point."
I loved the first film, but many fans did not. Orci goes on to say that the sequel might offer a chance to rectify some of the issues:

"[Fans] wanted more character time with everybody and, because that was an origin story for 'Star Trek,' everyone had to come in at a certain point. Now everyone is going to be there from the beginning, so they're going to get that. Everyone sure hated engineering. They thought it looked like a brewery, which it was. I'll pass that on to J.J. [Abrams] and see what he says."
The first draft of the script for the sequel is complete, but Orci still plans to cotinue working, he says:

"We'll be working and tweaking that story through shooting. This time we don't have a strike, so we'll actually be able to change things on the set. On the last movie, we handed in the script and that was it. You couldn't change a word. This one feels like we've got all the time in the world."

Star Trek taught me something very early in life I have yet to see anyone outside of a few writers do successfully:

    Never Listen To Fans.
Write your damn movie, and judge it as a movie not a Star Trek Movie.

Granted with Star Trek its harder than anything outside of Star Wars. You litterally have no chance in hell of pleasing everyone. For every person who had the gripes listed above, there's another who thought they where perfect, and hundreds inbetween.

Correct; however, you can piss off everyone.

So, if this is an even numbered Start Trek film (either XII or reboot II), this has got to be good, right?

Star Trek: Nemesis! it was even numbered and.... ick.

Actually, most of the TNG movies sucked but that was more because Picard turned from an intellectual into an action star. First Contact is probably the best TNG movie even with all Picards rage-induced silliness.

The Trek reboot was amazing so im expecting good things from this flick as the younger actors should be more comfortable with the roles now.

Shatner having a huge role in this flick would wind up just like Generations - lame. This fresh reboot should expand on the new timeline, throw in some klingons and avoid the fucking borg at all costs.

I loved the Reboot and I've been a fan since who I was like 4 or 5 so I basically grew up with Star Trek. I also have high hopes for the second. I agree that you can't please all Star Trek fans in fact I would avoid trying to at all costs that's how you ruin good movies (I'm sure there are multiple examples floating around). I'm not really looking forward to seeing Shatner in this one, the way the put Nimoy into the first one was good but Shatner does annoy me slightly so that may be why....

See his qualifier of "TNG movie" not "Star Trek Movie"

Am I the only one who really liked VI: Undiscovered Country? I thought the quality of the first six went something like: II, VI, IV, III, I, , , , , V

Well since you failed to read, yeah I did enjoy those movies too.

VI is in the middle for me. It's not II or IV which are classics but its not boring like I or silly (in the bad way) like V. III winds up in the middle for me as well since it wasn't terrible but it undercut the major point made in WoK.

Either way, Id probably watch all of these movies before sitting down to watch Nemesis or Insurrection. Poor TNG cast, getting stuck with those stinkers.
