Also, FFXI is a rip off of WoW because WoW is more popular and FFXI has magic which is stolen from WoW.

If SE was unique in any way or didnt steal everything from wow like using magic and weapons to defeat enemies, it might be a good game.

FFXIV could have put your ability bar anywhere they wanted but they put it on the bottom, the most easily viewable spot for the eyes that does not mess with the minimap, etc. But WoW had their action bar there so its obvious SE is still stealing from WoW...

I heard xiv will have monsters and magic too... when will these games stop copying WoW...
I would be mad too if I tried to reason with people who act like Apple fanboys.

For real? I could have sworn that feature was in nearly every MMO.

Most people said the mouse interface was terrible, and you can see from the videos posted of character creation where you had to use the mouse how slow and jerky it was. I'd say the reason you haven't got an answer yet is no one bothered to try since the mouse functionality was a PoS.

Someone will probably check it out for you on Tuesday.

Sorry, but I only remember it being mentioned in passing from someone who was playing alpha.

This is exactly what GRT was talking about. I never said it was original to wow, I only implied that it may have been influenced by wow. Grow the fuck up.

Edit: and nice ninja edit on your part as well. How's your iPad?

It was one of the very first interviews after E3, with Tanaka and Komoto. They didn't say which parts. They said that they had been paying attention to modern MMO's like Connan, Warhammer, and Warcraft.

It will probably be like FFXI was influenced by Everquest.

Oh. This isn't a link is it?

Hrm, it's hard to find the one I'm talking about.

12:02] Next question: "What kind of influences from other MMOGs like World of Warcraft have there been on FFXIV?"

[12:02] Komoto responds, "As with WOW, they're aimed at the casual user. We're aiming for more casual users. However, we don't want to make a copy of WOW. We want to be unique."[/I]

Haha. One of the hits on google is to this thread.

I still wonder what SE's idea of casual will be. I'm not talking about fights but I wonder if they will make fun/casual events that are up 24/7 that are just to waste time/have fun. I know it's kind of a dumb request for an MMO however having things to do just for the sake of screwing around with others is always a nice pace from the standard hack/slash stuff.

Nah that was another great innovation from blizzard, all this WoW comparison bullshit makes me cry a little inside.

    FFXIV != WoW

I'd be content with just being able to spend an hour or so and feel like I accomplished something, honestly. Even if it's a little bit towards a new level. 4+ hour parties start to grind on the nerves something fierce, especially since you don't want to ditch on 5 other people. The Guildleves look like they'll be great for those times I don't have a ton of time to dedicate towards a full exp session.

A smart MMO community that hopes their game would succeed would go "Yep, we have that feature you like from that other game you like, so why not come and check out this game, maybe you'll like this more!" Instead they go "wow go away Wowtard, we don't want you here, we like our exclusive 'SE-is-genius-and-we-hate-everything-else' club and we hope our playbase keep its small size because obvoiusly larger population in a MMO is a bad thing."
Typically, the larger the playerbase is, the more casuals there are, the more streamlined and simple things become to appeal to a wider audience. I'm not saying this isn't a financially ideal situation, because it worked splendidly for Blizzard, but at the cost of players like me who want something different. They don't care and I don't really blame them, but I'm honestly hoping that XIV fills the niche I belong to, smaller playerbase though it may be. I don't want SE to try stealing all of the players from WoW, because the only way to do that would be creating a game I wouldn't like.

As to the whole WoW/originality/copy thing, who cares. If XIV is influenced by something in another MMO, it doesn't mean that it's automatically a clone, or even similar at all to the other MMO. After all, XI is arguably heavily influenced by Everquest, but it still kept its own original identity.

I don't really think such simple, standard stuff like a minimap or ability slots can be said to be exclusively inspired by WoW, but by the current MMO and videogame RPG market in general. And there's honestly no shame in taking bits and pieces of tried and true things and putting a spin on them to make something even better. It's what WoW did, it's what XI did.

Nothing is new under the sun, after all.

You put it perfectly but sadly it will "go in one ear and out the other" so to speak. The same idiots will crop up again and again later as more info becomes available making their "comparisons".

Looking at the current discussion this most likely is off-topic by now, but are we going to use the same thread for the whole alpha/beta testing? It's going to be hell trying to find something specific from here and if you haven't kept up, no way you'll be able to read all this. Especially when parts of it don't even have anything to do with the damn Alpha.

I'm up for starting a new thread for when the new test starts, honestly. I usually come into this thread looking for info and some light speculation but I get this stuff instead.

Not sure, but one of the interviews mentioned that Mages will be able to use a basic MP-costless magical attack.
