I been using the same name from socom1, odds someone will try and copy it? darn right high >.> In socom 2 I Saw someone copy it and then in just about any other online game someone did as well. Most of the time its fine tho as Its not on the same server that I picked or what not. Its also the reason my name tends to change a little now in each game I play.
more than likely they will put it up in advance of servers going up so people not stalking the beta forums 24/7 can catch it early enough to get it installed before it starts, to maximize testing time.
Also is there any mention of how the alpha is set to last? i'm only asking because it sounds like alphas are typically short, and after alpha is beta, and that means more invites going out.
It's really going to depend on their prerogative and just how well the alpha goes. From the two alphas I've been in they're usually in waves targeted at something decently specific for a small period of time. If each targeted piece goes well then I see it being fairly short. That's almost never the case though and some of the things always don't go as planned which they will try to fix and have people retry it at a later date, adding more days/events.
Then again, SE isn't your normal company so they may work it differently.
The only thing they said in interviews/vanafest is how well people report things, so its either going to be quick or painfully slow but they will likely have it at minimum 2 weeks.
If you check your member status for the beta on your SE account page it has an end date of Apr. 25, 2010 (at least on mine). Whether or not it will actually end then is anyone's guess.
*feel free to delete if its a problem*
We will be able to Download the Alpha Client on April 6th at 1am PDT
Now that the Alpha manual is out there, we have more info as to what the character progression is going to be like.. but I'm not entirely sure if I understand the basics of it.
So, if there are physical levels and class ranks, there'd be basically 2 kinds of progression going on at once? "Physical levels" might mean stats, and "skill ranks" the skills & abilities you gain along the way? I wonder how these 2 are linked, and especially if your physical level will reset along with your skill rank if you change your weapon, or if you can keep your stats the same as before even when changing your weapon type.
Also, looks like the whole system is a lot more flexible than the SJ system in XI. If all the actions (with the exception of.. maybe skills that wouldn't work with said weapon type? Or weapon skills being bound to the weapon type, while abilities could be used between classes?) can be used between every class, the options to customize your class are quite numerous.
However, I'm interested in what they mean by the power and efficacy of each action being determined by it's affinity with the character's current skill. So, if your skill rank is low, the power of the action is lower too? I guess it makes sense. That doesn't make it sound like there would be some kind of a penalty to equipping a skill from some other class though, like in XI where it's power was weakened by like half by default.
Honestly, the physical level and the skill level thing sounds exactly like FFXI.
When your weapon skill got high enough, you learned a new WS!
